The Desktop + Laptop Catalog Session Dance
I've been a tech for many years now and the fact that I'm stumped with this for my own personal workflow is embarrassing as hell. That said, I'm looking for your input and help on this most basic of workflow issues.
I've got an old (late 2009) iMac that houses all of my photos from previous years. Folders are organized by year (i.e. MacHD > Photos > 2017 > 20171122_LocationScouting) and the iMac houses photos going all the way back to 2010. So the iMac is essentially the vault.
I've got a 2012 MBP that is my daily driver and houses all shoots from 2017 only.
Pre-2017 photos are taken care of: I use a catalog per year for those since they live in one place. It's the 2017 photos with which I'm struggling.
I sync the computers with Chronosync (different scripts for different facets of the machines) and for a while it seemed that the Chronosynced catalog for 2017 was working well and I used the "same" catalog on both machines. But lately, I've noticed that workflow falling apart when duplicates started showing up as well as other issues.
I'd like to retain the ability to edit images on either machine, so is it a 2017 Session on the laptop that gets imported into the iMac? Or, is it a session for every shoot on the laptop and each of those sessions gets imported into the 2017 catalog on the iMac? Or it is a session for each shoot on the laptop and a 2017 session on the iMac?
Thoughts?

I have been wrestling with how to sync a cataloque between my main pc and a macbook. Nothing really worked out so my solution was an external Samsung T5 ssd on which I now use managed catalogues. It works very fine, except having to be very careful with renaming outside CO1, e.g. when I want to rename files on disc. I mirror the folderstructure from which images are imported into the catalogue by means of groups and albums. Now that I have settled into this routine, it is very effective and avoids things like duplicates or various edits etc... 0 -
Thanks for your reply.
I've decided to scrap the catalog system altogether. The beauty of the session setup is the fact that all your changes live within the C1 folders within the image folders and can be picked up by other sessions you create in the future.0
