File naming conventions.. When can we keep ours?
I have a naming convention I have used for over 10 years. It has worked really well and keeps me from overwriting any files (Peter Krough came up with it.)
I have set it up in Capture One as a preset. However, every time I open Capture One or start a new session, I have to make sure that I go over and set the Next Capture Name pane to my preset. Which, occasionally, doesn't happen. Especially if an assistant is on the laptop.
How come we can name a preset but we can't have it become the default?

First, this is a most valid question. The current state is, that the renaming preset is session (or catalog) related.
The workaround is that you create new sessions, you create one from a pre-defined original, a.k.a. the template session. Each time you need a session, you copy and rename the template.
Note that you can create much more items like folders, favorites, albums, capture naming and so on in your template.0 -
Paul, do you mean copying in the Finder? That's just as inconvenient as setting the file naming manually each time you create a new session 😊 Of course, like you mention, you get more options to set. 0 -
Thanks Jeroen11,
I didn't want to blow up too fast. But...
Work arounds are not Workflows. And, while C1 does a lot really well, there are some gaping holes in the workflows that seem to me to be simple and necessary. As of right now, it adds a few steps to my workflow that seem to me ought to be "set it and forget it" type settings.
If you have the option of using presets, why can't they be made the "default" settings? For example, with the file naming..
You can add metadata as a style, but you can't set the metadata so that each new capture gets tagged with the same info. Well, you can but that means that the Next Capture is set to Defaults with Styles, instead of Copy from Last. So any changes as the shot evolves on set, means jumping through hoops. And, using Jeroen11's template idea does not solve the metadata problem.
Why is metadata a style anyway? Shouldn't it be its own setting, like white balance?0 -

I fully agree and would love to see this for myself.[quote="Jeroen11" wrote:

What Paul is suggesting isn't actually as irritating or complicated as it might sound. Capture One creates new sessions based on a template, which is stored under /Users/[UserName]/Pictures/Capture One Session within the finder.
Essentially what needs to happen is that you create a new session, and configure it to use all of the presets/configs that you like. Close C1. Take the contents of the session folder you've just configured and copy them in to the template location, and then every time you create a new session, it will have those settings ready to go from the start.
Doing this you can save all sorts of fancy things, such as the rename preset, but also things like pre-created folders such as "Look1, Look2" and so-on. Pretty handy actually.
If you screw something up, then you can close C1, delete the Capture One Session directory and C1 will automatically create a new one the next time you launch (but it will be reverted back to default settings). So I recommend that once you've got your ideal session config set up, make a backup of it and zip it and just leave it in the Pictures directory so it's ready to go if you need it.
There are some application specific settings not just related to the individual session that you can pre-setup the same way by making a copy of the contents of /Users/[UserName]/Library/Application Support/Capture One/ folders. This is especially helpful if you often have to move from one computer to another - you can easily take your ideal workspaces with you from machine to machine.
A little experimentation here is always necessary, but once you've got a setup you like it will be a simple thing to back up and save for the future. Yes, it is less convenient than all options for every setting in C1 having the ability to set a default, but it'll get you where you want to be in the mean time.
Of course, I'd love a UI based option to export/import these settings as opposed to going through the finder (while we're asking for things, right?) 😊
Hope that helps!0 -
Brian,
That helped big time! I will do some testing with tthis method this week. I think this will address about 75% of my challenges. The only part that I don't think it hits is the metadata.
I think this is the first time that I have heard that it works from a master template in the picture folder. Which explains why it always starts in that folder. Did I miss that in the help action or videos somewhere?0 -
Alright. I am still doing something wrong here. I thought I had the steps down but I still can't get it to keep the file naming.
So, here is what I did:
1. Open C1 and a new capture session, setting the location to the desktop (where I start all my projects. later I move them to other folders or the workstation machine).
2. At this point, I left the session name as untitled.
3. Set the Next Capture Name to my file naming preset.
4. Quit C1
5. Copy the contents of the Untitled session into the Capture One Session folder under Pictures. I have tried both with the cosessiondb file and without it.
5. Open C1 and choose New Session. And, it is the standard C1 defaults. My naming does not hold.
I tried to do it as "Open..." the untitled session. But then I have the session living in the Pictures Folder and I can't rename it in C1.
The only way I have kept my prefs is if I:
1. make the untitled session, with my preset file naming.
2. Go to the finder and make a copy of the untitled session folder
3. rename the session folder
4. Open the sesssion folder and rename the cosessiondb file
5. THEN open C1by double clicking on the cosessiondb.
Is this really the only work around?0 -

Yes, this is what I meant with my previous post in this thread, the so-called template session workaround.0 -
Okay. We'll work that into our workflow.
It would be handy if C1 would work it into theirs!
Thanks everyone.0
