corrupted CF card, Mac 10.5.6, CO 4.6 & 5DMII
I lost a full 2GB card from a shoot the other day. I loaded it into CO 4.6 - one image appeared in the import window then CO crashed. After that the card wasn't able to be read by the finder, disk utility or even the camera it was shot with. Data rescue can't read it either. I don't know if it is CO's fault, it could be a bad card, something with the camera, etc. but I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I noticed on a previously loaded card that CO 4.6 writes cache settings to the actual CF card, I've never seen that before. It doesn't seem like a good idea to do that. Is it possible that could contribute to card corruption?

First thought that comes up is that CO 4.6 appears to be writing to the card which is already full. The resulting error condition is not properly handled by CO 4.6 nor OS X. Resulting crash corrupted the file allocation table of the CF card, making it unreadable (til formatting) for any application.
Solution: format card in camera because I assume it is a quick format allowing recovery software to recover your files. Test this on a different card first.0 -
I'll try your suggestion and report back later. Can I ask why CO 4.6 must write to a CF card in order for it to import files? If this causes more corruption and data loss, obviously this is a terrible bug like the one in 4.5.1 that lost Canon files upon computer power failure. 0
