Lens Profiles
Hi,
I am new on this forum and this is my first post. I use a Windows 8.1, Sony A580, and Capture One Pro for Sony. My problem is I have no lens profiles, not even "Generic". I use mostly Sony lenses and a couple Sigma and Tamron lenses.
Where are the lens profiles located, so I can look to see if there are any profiles on my computer?

Hi Don,
You want the Lens Correction tab as the easiest place to start. The Lens correction tools are all shown there.
There is a box for "Profile" with up and down arrows at the end of it. Click there and you will get into the lens profile database which I assume will be limited to Sony related products in your version of C1.
There is no guarantee that all possible lenses are profiled, especially third party lenses. (Non-Sony lenses in your case.)
In some situations, depending on the camera and lens combination, you may see a reference to Manufacturer adjustments derived from the camera (so the camera can correct jpgs) in which case it is likely that there is no independent lens evaluation profile as an alternative UNLESS the lens has been previously tested for some reason.
You are probably aware of thins but just for clarity for future readers of the thread, the lens correction facility works only for RAW (ARW) files as far as I am aware. (jpg files would have the adjustments included when processed in camera).
For the full chapter and verse your best bet would be to create a Support Case and get official guidance.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I know where the Lens Profile tab is. When I go to <Lens Profile><Lens><Profile> the selection is blank. There is nothing to select, not even Generic. I am using dng format nor ARW. I have always thought of dng as a raw format. But let me check.0 -
Hi,
It looks like dng format is the problem! dng is not considered a raw format. That sort of screws up my workflow and the thousands of pictures I have in dng format.

Adobe present DNG (more than one version around these days) as a RAW alternative but that was because they originally wanted the manufacturers to adopt their standards. As I recall not many cameras moved to DNG as their RAW conversion.
Presumably your DNG files have already been processed from the ARWs and would have needed the lens correction applied at that time - like jpg. RAW files, DNGs, TIFFs - all are interpretations of primarily (but not always) lossless raw data but they may or may not be appropriate electronic facsimiles of the RAW data when considered for lens adjustments. The safe approach is to assume that they are not identical and to then allow people access to tools to make their own adjustments should they feel the need.
Outside Professional Repro work and some product and most architectural photography I don't think mass interest in lens correction was an issue until the camera manufacturers started to design cameras (mostly small systems) that relied on software to correct lenses for the limitation of optical physics reached when designing small systems but seeking large system quality.
Now of course we all want lens correction whether we really need it or not ... 😉
There have been a few other threads in the forum about this or similar issues, mostly in the past year or less.

The lens profile information CO Pro 8 uses, is derived from the original raw. Converted into DNG does not contain this information, hence you lose the ability to use the lens profile feature in CO Pro 8.0 -
To OP:
As SFA (Grant) already mentioned your Sony version may show only profiles for Sony lenses and not from other makers. This could include 3rd party lens makers like Tamron, Tokina and Sigma because, even if there may not exists profiles for such 3rd party lenses in Sony mount, there are several for Canon and Nikon mount. If it is the same lens just with a different mount I'm usually at least give those profiles a try. But as mentioned I'm not sure whether the specific Sony version of C1Pro is limited only to the support of Sony cameras or also is limited in the lens profile section.0
