How to import by date?

When I want to import images from a multi-day project, I instruct C1 to create subfolders by date. What it seems to do is organize according to the date of importing, not the date of exposure. This is not very useful, IMO, and it can result in the creation of huge folders that are slow to edit. Is there some other way to create subfolders?
