skin tones and layers
Hello
I am new to Capture one and I still have problem to use skin tones locally.
I want to work on the skin tones of a portrait locally.
so according to the tutorial on the website of phase one, I create a new local adjustment called "skin tones". What kind of local adjustments should I choose ?
How do I get automatically the face of my model selected ?
Instead, I create a layer with the pencil on the face of my model.
then I go to work on skin tone tab. but whatever the change or adjustment, I don't see any effects . I even tried to turn the white face of my model to dark . no effects....
What do I miss ? The tutorials are great but they are too fast and are made for people who knows already the previous versions of capture one pro. which is not my case as I am a user of lightroom ...
Thanks for helping on such simple thing...

The pencil tool is for annotations (see tool tip). I assume you are using the skin tone color picker?
No local adjustments without a mask. Did you draw/create a mask (on your adjustment layer) with the brush tool? (You can also create a mask from a color selection.)
Nope, no automatic face recognition.

There is no automatic option for masking only a models face, you will need to create a new layer and manually make the mask with the make mask/brush tool before you see any adjustments made, you can use the auto mask feature for assistance and press the M key to view the mask while you are drawing it. After you make the mask use the pick color correction tool in the Advanced or skin tone tabs and select the skin tone you'd like to adjust by clicking on the image.
The skin tone tabs adjustments are rather subtle compared to the Advanced tab, you'll notice Lightness for example is +/- 10 on the Skin tone Tab and +/- 100 on the Advanced tab. That said you should still notice a difference when you are making the adjustments.0 -

True enough BUT in certain situations the skin colour to be adjusted may not appear widely across the rest of the image - or at least not in such a way that making changes without masking (on the background "layer" as we should probably think of it in V11) may be enough for the task.
If so it would offer an opportunity to save little time - especially for proof level work across many studio images.
Certainly the mask is a more powerful approach and recommended but it may be useful, especially for more recent C1 adopters, to point out that the specific skin tone adjustment tool has existed for a while and long before layers appeared in C1.
Also that it is not actually limited to skin colours in terms of the specific controls that it offers. Skies, for example, can be fun too!0 -
Hello
Thanks for all answers and the youtube tutorial was really helpful and more detailed.
I understand of skin tone in C1 compared to other softwares.
But how can I brush the skin to smooth and reduce imperfections ?
I am a lightroom user and in lightroom I use a brush with reducing noise and lightness ("clarity").0 -
Well you could remove spots with the spots tool with a clone/repair layer.
There is "clarity" we well but to me the result is very obvious and doesn't look very good. At least my clients wouldn't like it...0 -
Negative Clarity will soften under the mask.
In the Colour Editor, Skin Tone tab "smoothness" will gently blend the colour range selected. Uniformity may be useful as well.

For a more realistic looking type of skin retouching rather than noise reduction, negative clarity, etc, I would suggest to search for dodge and burn tutorials for skin retouching. D&B retouching along with heal/clone tools will give some of the most pleasing results (that I know of) albeit a more time consuming approach as well.
In Capture One to dodge and burn you would make one layer, the dodge layer, with a positive exposure value (+1 stop for example), and a second layer, the burn layer, with a negative exposure value (-1 stop for example). The +/- exposure values could be set any number of ways, exposure slider, levels, curves, etc. Then with the mask tool set to a very low flow setting you would gradually brush the dodge layer onto dark areas of the skin and gradually brush burn layer on to brighter areas of the skin. A third layer could be your heal or clone layer for removal of the more defined blemishes and such.
I find it to be faster and more intuitive to do this type of work in photoshop, but it can be done in Capture One or Lightroom all the same.0
