Capture Pilot question
This may be a very basic question but I have not found the answer on the web.
I don't plan to use Capture One Pro to shoot tethered (at lest for now). But I like the concept of being able to view the pics on the ipad away from the PC with the client.
So here is what I tried
Set capture Pilot to the folder of the client. Set a name and password, disable capture
Start the Image server
On the ipad install capture Pilot and start it.
I can not always see the server (I disabled all the firewalls on my Windows 7/64bit workstation
Now I see the server on the Ipad but noting does happen when I try to connect.
Am I missing anything here. Is it really limited to in studio tethered shooting ? browsing and rating the pics from the Ipad would be very convenient in my workflow. I do the post processing for my self and 2nd photography.
Any suggestions are welcome
Klaus

Hi Klaus,
Although the Capture Pilot application is advertised to be used in conjunction with tethered shooting, it is technically not limited to that functionality. You can view any folder, favorite or album from the iPad with Capture Pilot at any time.
Based on your description your setup is correct and the fact that the server name (what you provided in the Image Server on Capture One) is showing up in Capture Pilot is a good sign.
You mentioned that you have disabled all firewalls on your computer. Hmmm, may I suggest that you do not install any firewall on Win7 other than the default? Third party firewalls are often killing necessary connectivity. And the default firewall is configured automatically for Capture One to allow incoming connections for TCP/port 80.
Also check your version of Bonjour from the Control Panel, Uninstall Software section, which lists all installed software. Should be 2.0.4 or later.
Also, check whether computer and iPad are on the same local network, which is presumably OK because the server name showed up in the iPad/Capture Pilot app, which indicates Bonjour is working, which implicates same segment.
Does the iPad/Capture Pilot app says it connects but displays a black screen without thumbnails or does it not connect?0 -
Thanks for the feedback so it is technically possible.
The only firewall I did disable is the Windows 7 default firewall. I have my whole network behind a firewall so this one was not needed anyway.
Bonjour is the Version 2.0.4
My windows 7 is running inside a Vmware but that should not have any impact.
On the I pad once I click on the server the app goes away with the turning wheel and nothing really happens so no idea if it is not connecting or if it returns a blank screen.
as for network the server is wired to the network by cable and the wifi is running through my wifi hotspot.
Any other ideas on how to troubleshoot it ?0 -

It depends how the virtual network adapter of your virtual machine is defined. I believe you have 'bridged' and NAT. You should use bridged, but not NAT.0 -
all my vmware's are bridged and have their own IP on the same sub-network as all other physical devices 0 -
Checked with VMware and it is ok.
You might want to check the folder that you select in the Capture Pilot/Image Server tool in Capture One. This must be either an session folder (like Capture Folder), session favorite or session album.
If you do not select a folder that Capture Pilot can display you will see a black screen on your iPad after connecting to the image server.
Tip: make your folder to display a session favorite in the Library tool and select that favorite in the Capture Pilot tool.0 -
Paul,
Thanks for the suggestion. I defined the capture folder as the folder I wanted to look at. started the server. I see in on the Ipad when I click on the server name I see the whee turning and then noting. after a few tries I get the error message Unreachable Server.
This thing is driving me crazy. can't wait to get a reply form support on my logged case.0 -

This sounds more like a network issue to me. Have you managed to connect to a physical machine, that is not a virtual machine?0 -
Not sure what you mean about network issues.
My Ipad is connecting to my lan and the physical firewall. It is also connecting with FTP to the file server where all the music is stored.
From the vmware I can connect to the other physical server with no problem. HTTP to my streaming server (another VM on a physically different machine) it connects fine to my music library on another physical server as well.
I think there are some issues with bonjour, have not really found a good howto troubleshoot it0 -
The symptoms you describe have a similarity with a situation in which the iPad retrieves the available service (the Capture Pilot tool's Image Server of Capture One Pro) but you are unable to make the connection.
This is a scenario I have seen at several occasions. Explanation:
The Bonjour service on the computer with Capture One broadcasts the available service and port on the local network as soon as you start the Image Server. Because this is outbound traffic to the computer, a firewall would block it. As a result the iPad with Capture Pilot almost immediately discovers the available service (=your computer with Capture One Pro, Image Server started). Note that broadcast traffic like Bonjour does not pass through routers, in general, in other words you must be on the same local network segment to make the discovery work.
Once you start to connect to the discovered service from your iPad, the computer must allow in-bound traffic from the iPad (TCP port 80). In other words, connecting is a complete different activity than Bonjour discovery. If this fails, you get a Unreachable Server message on the iPad. This often indicates that the service that Bonjour discovered can not be reached for what ever reason (firewall, most often). This is what I meant with a network issue.
Note that for the iPad (free) apps exist to see Bonjour services (I can give names when my iPad returns later today). And although I think it is not your Bonjour service, you can bypass it by entering in your iPad the exact IP address of the computer with Capture One in a manual configuration screen from the server list screen. That is where you can start your troubleshooting.0 -
Paul,
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I did go back to my windows machine and checked and disabled all firewall settings and added explicit rules to grant bonjour an capture one full access in the rules (but they should be turned ignored since the Firewall is off).
On the Ipda I installed scoutr (free app to browse bonjour).
I see a lot of services for my linux boxes like sftp-ssh, ssh, ...
The only one available from the windows server is coreremote
Still no luck. At least I got 1 crash and sent the report to phase one. would really love to get this to finally work0
