16 Bit Prints vs 8bit?
I'm looking at outsourcing my print jobs, however most labs now want you to convert your files to jpeg, reducing my files to 8bit. Am I going to loose considerable detail? Should I process the image differently? If anyone has recommendations on US labs it would be greatly appreciated!

simply look for a lab that also handles TIFs.

8bit vs. 16bit... it depends. Baiscally there is a color conversion involved from file to print so you might run into issues (banding, color clipping ...). However I think that's rarely the case if the files are prepared well (you'll need for sure the printer profile for softproofing in Photoshop).
I convert my files to the printer profile in Photoshop (in 16bit ... I first switch to 8bit after the conversion) and send these files to my lab in the respective printer profile. You have to find a lab that provides such accommodating service - in this particular case they have to deactivate color management for the printing (which meens they have to change their printer settings in the software).0 -
I appreciate your help. My large format printer which handles 16bit TIFF file is down for repair. Unfortunately what I am finding out is, few if any labs handle TIFF let alone 16bit at least here in the US. If I simply tell the labs to shut off there color correction should I be ok, or should I still send them my monitor profile? 0 -
Your monitor profile won't help the printing facility in whatever way unless you send your monitor as well 😁 .
Besides the option thowi described (convert to printer profile), you can send in your image file with a working space profile included like sRGB, AdobeRGB or a larger space and have the print service convert it to their printer profile.0 -

what about this lab? http://www.hancepartners.com[quote="NN116688UL" wrote:
they don't need your monitor profile. But they have to send you their printer profile (for the respective paper). This is not a workflow "out of the box" so you should talk to them prior to sending them any files.

After reviewing all my options, I think I will keep the printing potion in house since 16bit files and color profiles are not an issue. 0
