Use Black & White in Local adjustments?

    You can reduce the saturation to zero as a local adjustment and you can also do some other things that you might do in a black and white conversion, such as apply a curve or adjust the contrast. But beware - I have discovered that if you have the saturation at more than the zero mid point on the image as a whole, the black and white bit ends up not quite monochrome (because the local adjustment saturation is relative to the image as a whole, not an absolute amount). The answer is therefore to create another local adjustment layer that is the inverse of the black-and-white one, and only increase the saturation on that, not on the whole image.
