processing speed test
i just bought a mac pro 8 core 2.8 ghz 4 gb of ram and did some processing speed test with 3 different software
processing canon eos1ds mk2 files raw to tiff
this is the result :
capture one 3.7.6 22 sec
aperture 2.0 17 sec
bibble 4 7 sec
Can somebody explain to me why phase one is not utilizing the multi core technology in there software ?
Is the capture 4 pro will be the same ?

First, if you run Leopard, you are strongly advised to use CO 3.7.8, since this is the first Leopard compatible release, I believe.
Next, you assume that CO is not utilizing the multiple cores in your computer. You cannot say that from the numbers. Did you open Activity Monitor while processing? According to a recent thread here, PO staff told us that CO 3.7.8 is using all cores in a 8 core Mac Pro.
Last, I expect CO4 to be faster than CO3.x on an Intel Mac. In a comparison on a MacBook Pro (among others) a 1Ds mkII file converted to 8-bits TIFF took 19 sec (CO378) or 13 sec (CO4).
[how I measure: process 11 files without corrections, measure the time lapse between 1st and 11th file and divided that through 10.]
Looking forward to see your results with CO4.
Note: I did not go into the debate of 'faster is better'. 😂0 -
Hello,
Capture One Pro does use multi cores on Mac, only the windows version of 3.7.x is limited in terms of multi core support.
Paul is on the right track in terms of "faster is better." One thing to consider when looking at why Capture One tends to be slower than some other software is that we are processing for the full data in a raw file and doing so in an in-depth manner. Not all raw software uses as complex an algorithm m or uses the same number of samples when interpolating data. One other aspect of how Capture one is setup is that I t process the file to ram and then writes the image disk, so a certain amount of processing time is controlled by disk write time.0
