Trialling your software. My thoughts after two days.
I've spent the last few days trialling Capture One 9 and I love the raw processing. The colours are so much better than Lightroom as is the micro contrast, sharpening, layering etc etc. On this point I'm sold.
But Capture One just seems to be so full of bugs and infuriating to use. How do C1P users put up with this?
The catalogs are just plain awful. I spent an hour trying to add smart folders with various rules that just wouldn't work. No images where added to the smart album. After an hour of messing around I gave up and closed Capture One. A few hours later I opened Capture One again and low and behold all the smart folders where working. So clearly a bug there.
I imported my Lightroom Catalog (A feature in Capture one). Around 1/3 or my images never imported (CR2 and DNG files). I had to sync folders to get the missing images. Another Bug.
Having to switch your tool all the time is a pain as it is and even more so when the short cut keys don't work. I've had times where I can press v until I'm blue in the face but it never changes to the pointer.
I spent some time editing an image from a smart folder and wanted to edit in an external editor for some touch up work. Capture One won't let you send a file to an external editor from any user setup group, smart album or album. You have to go and find the image in the folders section. Why? Surely you just reference the original file?
When I open Capture One it straight away uses around 9Gb Ram and after editing just a few images, It's using nearly 20Gb RAM. All the sliders and image re-rendering is unusably slow. A restart fixes this. This is unacceptable.
I've had a number of occasions where clicking the Black and White tick box to convert the image to black and white does nothing. You can click it on and off until the cows come home but the image remains in colour. Using their B/W presets don't work either. Restarting C1P fixes this. Another bug!
Does Phone One not test their software? I've been using it for a couple of days sporadically and I've already found so many bugs it's unbelievable.
And you expect me to pay them 279 Euro for this crap.!!!!!!!
Capture One. Great Raw processing, really shit user interface and buggy software.
I'm afraid as much as I love your processing there is no way in hell I'm parting with my money for this.
RANT OVER.
Edit: Another bug in the advanced colour editor
I have select two colours. A yellow (RGB 215 193 108) and a dark blue/grey (RGB 25 24 24)
It doesn't matter which of the two colours I pick, if I change the lightness, hue, saturation only the yellow colour changes.

Many thanks for such a quick and full reply. There is a lot of food for thought there and I am sure it will help me make a good decision. I took the cautious approach by duplicating my LR library and inporting that into C1 so I currently have two libraries which I am keeping up to date by importing new images to both. What happens with sidecar xmp files generated in LR or C1 when you view the image in the other application?
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.0 -
Hi Jimmy,
I don't understand your vision about soft-proofing in C1. I have found it better than in LR, especially when you use a dual screen configuration, which is my case. I haven't use LR for a while now, but the last time I used it seriously (it was with LR 5.7), soft-proofing didn't work on my second (calibrated) screen. This is one of the reasons why I decided to switch to C1, the main reason being the color treatment and capacities.
I agree that LR catalog is far better than the C1's, but it works enough on my computer to satisfy my needs. But, hopefully, Phase One will make some efforts to improve the C1 SQLite database..... We can dream !!
BTW, what is your 3rd party printing software ?0 -

Fully agreed. This is the main area that C1 falls down for me in terms of looking for a one-product-solution.0 -

As far as the sidecar goes, I haven't a clue. My observation is that each program just ignores the other's data.0 -

Its funny you asked about soft-proofing. Just yesterday I learned a new technique to help me out in that regard. Just add an adjustment layer(s), and name it "Print Adjustments"
But my main gripe is that we cannot rename variants. LR automatically creates a variant named after the profile, which is really nice. Also you can tick off the profiles you wanna choose from. In C1, you have to look at ALL the profiles in order to find the one you like you wanna use.
As far as my printer software goes, I use Mirage Print.
Print Tao is another contender, but at the time I demoed it, gallery wrap wasn't available. I have since tried it again just for giggles but the quality didn't seem as good. That could be me trying justify keeping Mirage though.
There are three things I wish Mirage would do, two of which comes from LR.
It will not print crop lines to the edge of the print. My printer skews just a little and having a printed crop to the edge assures me that I'm cutting straight as far as the print goes.
It will not remember package setups. It will remember how many duplicates and settings but not custom packages like LR. This really sucks, but not a deal killer.
You cannot create custom cuts on a roll. This is a feature in Print Tao. Lets say you wanna print 60 greeting cards. Handling that much paper after the print can be cumbersome. In Print Tao you can tell it to cut after every 20" or whatever length you like. My workaround is to just make smaller jobs and repeat.
Of course, you can create a recipe to send the image directly to Mirage and it works great. So you can bypass the print dialogue in C1 if you like.
But I always send it to PS to soft-proof,resize,and sharpen for print.
I may play around with by-passing PS and see what happens.
My Mac is no slouch and C1's catalog has made drastic improvements as of late, so its not terrible.
I imagine at the pace they are going, it won't be long before LR will be a memory.0 -

Well, if you use the "Output" tools tab and enter your favorite profiles in "Process Recipes", you can soft-proof any of them by simply click View -> Proof Profile -> selected Recipe. This is what I do every day (or so 😊 ), and it works quite well.0
