    Hi,

Initially I kept both versions (I tested 7.2.4 Beta) and downloaded version 8 as trial version. However, I had some issues with my copy and apply adjustments. Therefore, I decided to completely uninstall and clean my installation on my MacBook Pro. Now I have a clean and smoothly running version 8.

Thanks for the quick reply Peter
Did your catalogs from ver 7 carry over to ver 8 when it was installed?

You can have installed both versions, CO7 and 8. They have their own preference settings. Catalogs and session from CO7 can be opened in CO8, but be aware that you can not go back.

For a trial, you can make distinct CO8 sessions and catalogs until you are confident to switch.

That is an important point which I had missed ... thank you for making it!

if I choose the option replace v.7 at installation of v.8, what will happen to all my specific user settings of v.7? Will they imported to v.8 or will I loose them after installation? Will all my catalogs automatically being imported to v.8 using the v.8 engine?

There are a few different aspects to consider when upgrading from CO7 to CO8.

First, you can decide to have both programs on your disk, or replace CO7 with 8. See details in this thread.

Second, CO8 will have its own program settings, a.k.a. preferences. If I am correct, CO8 will copy the preferences from CO7, but you will be able to change it independent from your CO7 preferences (in case you still have CO7 after installing CO8). Take a look in CO8 preferences anyway, there are a few nice additions which has not been discussed here in the forum. 😁 Be the first one to discover!

Third, all your image adjustments made with CO7 in session or catalog will be retained in CO8. Note however, that after opening session, catalog or a folder with images in CO8, the session db, catalog db and Settings subfolder (when using sessions) are upgraded to CO8 and can not be opened from CO7. It is a one way migration. Yes, the old db's and settings folders are retained and backed up, but that is only in case of emergency.

Fourth, CO8 will use the Engine 7 for images adjusted in CO7. You will have to change the Engine to 8 manually in CO8. Upgrading the Engine in CO8 to Engine 8 will unlock all new features (some are not available with Engine 7, like WB and HDR on layer) but can affect the look of the image. Therefore, this is not done automatically. New images, without older adjustments, are imported with the default Engine, which is Engine 8 unless set differently in the preferences.

To summarize, it sounds more complicated than it is. All defaults are set to make the transition as smooth as possible. Always make your backups so you stay in charge.

Last tip for experimenting with Engine versions: you can have different Engine on the same image with Variants. A Clone Variant will have the same Engine as the source, a New Variant will have the Engine set in preferences.
