    The settings files (*.cos) hold all the information for variants. So if you delete them, you can't RECOVER from it unless you have backups. I always save my raws and .cos settings, but delete the proxies. If I need to reprocess a single photo I will copy the raw and the settings file to a work folder (with the .cos file going to the proper subfolder within) and work from there so as to not rebuild all the proxies of the original folder again.

    Changing the location of files on your disc should not be a problem as long as you maintain the settings subfolder.

    Of course, with 5.1, you could pack the files (any file) as EIP and then not worry about sidecar files.
