A troubling update for a few reasons...
Firstly I have used capture one for many years it has been my favourite RAW editor and IMO is still the best overall experience available, however…
Considering the price hike and lack of new features ( Luminosity mask is great but is it a STAR feature these days? Personally, I don’t think so) I feel they should have at least released a version of C1 that was faster and more stable. And at least fixed the bugs from C1 11.
I feel this update has been rushed out. My experience with C1 12 is that it’s considerably laggier and contains far more bugs than I have seen in any previous C1 version. I have now used C1 12 on a 2014 MBP and the latest 2018 MBP and on both C1 12 is noticeably slower at viewing photos and both have crashed 2-3 times.
The 2014 MPB using C1 11 is faster at viewing photos than the 2018 MBP using C1 12. Even things like turning on mask visibility can take a few extra seconds in C1 12.
Lack of innovation, laggy/buggy software, price hikes, the age of old debates like why C1 needlessly makes converted DNG cumbersome to use… Makes me, for the first time in 5 years, question the future of C1 and whether it's smart to keep all eggs in this basket.
C1 is still not a mainstream program and does rely on word-of-mouth and loyalty from its base. It's my observation that when loyal customers start to feel disrespected there is a good possibility they will look elsewhere.
It is my understanding, from a few photographer friends, that Adobe is testing a completely new version of Lightroom that is a “Game changer†and similar in principle to what On1 2019 have done. If that’s the case and C1 doesn’t step up its game, perhaps it’s time for me to say goodbye.

Be like the fox, ensure alternative paths to freedom.
It is all about your time and money with dashes of personal preferences added. What stops you?0 -
Thank you for your thoughts. I agree with your comments.
Until now I have been more than happy with C1 and never felt any desire to change. Also, the thought learning another program gives me a little anxiety.
Yesterday, I decided to sign up to Lynda.com (which is now called Linkedin learning) and in my free time will start learning about other RAW editors. Not because I want to make a switch but in the event I did it won’t be such a daunting process.
C1 12 has made me realise the importance of, as you say, ensuring alternative paths to freedom.
Best wishes to all.0 -
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments.
I had tried out the beta before the upgrade price was announced, and I was surprised at how limited the new features were
When I saw the upgrade price, I was even more surprised.
But in the end, we all get to vote with our wallets. Phase One obviously made a business decision to maximize profits by not investing enough in their software development staff to improve the product more, and by charging much more for upgrades. That’s their decision. As consumers, we get to “voteâ€, by not buying the upgrade. If enough people decide to do that, hopefully Phase One will decide that their optimum business strategy requires providing more value, either in additional features or a lower price. They could do that soon, by providing more features in 12.x release. The .x releases used to provide significant product updates, but I noticed in v11 that this was no longer the case.
I won’t be upgrading now, but I will be watching what Phase One does.0 -

I don't agree with the preceding posts. The improvements when compared with those done previously between versions N-1 and N, are similar in quantity and quality. The radial mask is important, as well as the better gradient mask, but what is worth it is the Luma range, which is fabulous, when compared with those existing in other software(s?). And it should have cost a lot of work.
Don't expect to have more significant features with the 12.x versions. Usually, they are edited for new camera bodies or lenses, and the correction of some bugs.
But I completely agree with all of you that the price increase was much larger than expected when compared to what existed for previous updates.0 -
Well of course we are all free to decide on how significant the total of new features are. However, when Phase One has to claim a search feature for keyboard shortcuts and a slightly more intelligent cut and paste of adjustments as one of their half dozen key new features for v12, I think that’s a tacit admission that the cupboard is bare.
As to .x improvements, my sincere hope is that more features were planned for v12 and they just ran out of time. Releasing significant new features as part of a.x release over the next few months would go a ways to answering the concerns of those who don’t see value equation of v12 as good.0 -
It also depends on the camera system you're using. As a Fujifilm shooter I'm thrilled with this release (though I have the same qualms about the database side that I've had for quite a few versions). Were I still be shooting Canon, I'd agree with your sentiment, though the radial masking feature is one I've been longing for for ages. 0 -
I just sold off all of my Fuji cameras and bodies The problem was not at all anything to do with that fantastic system, it was merely that my brain does not seem to be able to switch from one brand to another easily enough, so for my own state of shooting zen I sadly consolidated around Nikon only.
But despite that, just the fact that Phase One took the care and effort to support Fuji so well, would be reason enough for me to vote with my wallet FOR Capture One. Fuji's sensor technology I'm sure was a major investment of effort, and it shows a lot about a company like Phase One, and gives me confidence going forward, even though I now don't benefit directly.
The one problem with prices too low, is that there is no way quality testing and research into new improvements can possibly be sustained. Low prices are short term thinking. Yeah, I love to save money, but the investment in learning software, is in a way the most expensive investment, if you think about it.0 -

In my opinion, C1 prices have never been “too lowâ€. C1 is the most expensive RAW editor and has been for a while, yet still C1 12 was released with a level of instability and bugs I personally have not seen in any previous release. They didn’t even fix the bugs from C1 11 which have been carried over. My experience with C1 12 is that it is slower and more unstable than any previous version.
If we look at the cheaper competition (like Lightroom) they have had a proper gradient and radial tool for years along with a luminosity mask. There are free apps that have these features. They are great to have, but for me, these are features I expect in a high-end RAW editor and I don’t see them as star features or selling points.
I don’t feel people are complaining about the price hike in and of itself. We have been paying a premium to use C1 for years. I upgraded to the full version of C1 12 on day one. I could see there was a lack of new features but went ahead anyway. However, the laggy/buggy nature of this release combined with the lack of innovation makes me question the justification of a price hike on a product that was already the most expensive on the market.
I very much agree that no opinion is right or wrong. It’s very much a matter of individual perspective. I’m not a Fuji shooter but I have heard it’s a good update for you. That said, Fuji shooters seem to be affected by some of the same bugs and instability issues with a few of their own mixed in.
I really do love C1 and have been using it for years. I VERY much want them to succeed. That is why I write in the forums for the first time ever. If companies get complacent or arrogant, especially while playing catch-up, it doesn't always end well. When a die-hard C1 fan like me starts looking elsewhere I feel there will be others thinking the same. I am very much hoping C1 addresses a few of these concerns in the next update.

I haven't struck any bugs as of yet, do not push the software very hard. I have noticed is the software is very slow on my reasonably high spec'ed mac book pro which is disappointing. Almost like someone forgot to remove the debug software.

I think I tried all of that before with no benefit. I will try again tomorrow and report back.

I agree fully. I looked into On1 raw 2019 and was really surprised about the leap forward they made and the possiblities the software has. They even have their version of skin tone. Yes, I know c1 has this special glow straigth out of camera and the luma curve, but still. Plus the costs are way lower and I can see what they are currently working on.
As long as the current problems in C1 are not solved I’ll hold my horses and decide later this year which direction I will take.0 -
Performance improvement is spectacular. Minimal delay when opening new sub-catalogues.
Excellent. 😄

And I don't like the "spectacular" results obtained with this software. I prefer from far the natural aspect of the pictures I can get with it. 0 -

Hi Alexander,
Thank you for your suggestion, it was one of the first things I tried and sadly had no effect.
I’m hoping C1 will release an update shortly. I am continuously being surprised at how many things got broken between 11 and 12.
Best wishes.0 -
I tried that and it worked for the first time and reverted to previous behaviour ever since.
