The link above leads to a video that has helped me to appreciate the update more. My big takeaways are.

    1. The upgrade to the High Dynamic Range tool is bigger than I thought on first impression. The ability to add contrast with the Highlight and Shadow sliders is pretty big. Seems very simple but the tool is so powerful that I can see this being very helpful.

    2. The ability to have different colour ranges in the Basic Colour tool for every image is nice. Still a pretty light change though.

    3. The key commands in the Crop Tool are smart.

Here is something that I wanted to add. I just realized that I missed some of the interface upgrades like the scrolling tools section because when Capture One remembered and kept my customized workspace. So I like that it remembered my settings.

    4. The Scrolling sidebar/toolbar is very nice.

I have gone through it and it seems to me that they...

    2. They added black and white to the dynamic range tool. Is it just me or is this not found in just about every other photo editor on the planet already? I simply found it odd that it was missing before. This being said a welcome addition.

    3. Basic Color Edit. OK, so this we could do before I do not see any update here at all, other than a slight tweak on the interface. Am I missing something here? Seems I have been doing this with both the basic and advanced colour editor since day one. Simply not a new feature at all:?:

The Blacks and Whites sliders in the HDR tool are not the same as the equivalent named sliders in LR. IN LR they are used to set the Black and White point because LR does not have a Levels tool.

In C1 you still use the Levels tool to set Black and White points and this setting is used to determine the narrow range over which the Blacks and Whites sliders operate. If you don't set the Black and White point with the Levels tool you will prevent the Blacks and Whites sliders from working properly.

The new Basic colour editor is a big improvement for the lucky Fuji and Sony guys who get the free version of C1, and they haven't taken away the original colour wheel either. You also seem to have missed the direct colour editing available by using the colour dropper and direct click and drag colour editing on the image. Oh, and you can create masks from the colour selection. Quite a big update in functionality.

Very good points Ian and an excellent summation.

The part about the Express version benefits had passed me by but is very pertinent.

I'm also seeing some excellent result with the NR. Nothing extreme in the 'make it possible to melt things' smoothness model but some really good refinement.

Second on how good the DX0 noise reduction is. Pretty much best in class by a wide margin. It is slow however; very slow.

Yeah you are right on the criticisms. I feel a lot of these things could easily fit into a point release. There are a lot of major updates that could have been done but they have a strange list of priorities.

I wanted to come back to this after using it for a while with my feelings.

    1. Noise Reduction Since I wrote my feelings based on first impressions I have upgraded my camera to a Canon 5Ds. For those not familiar the relevant feature is that it has a 51MP sensor. When using the C1 noise reduction on the raw files of this size the performance was much better. This made sense to me right away seeing that Phase one is a medium format camera company. At 51MP my camera is entering that arena and the difference in performance with this feature was clear.

My suggestion to C1 would be to have a low res and a high res switch on the NR to help people working with smaller sensors. M43 for example, as well as even my 21MP shots, did not work anywhere near as well.

Sadly I don't find the NR good enough for my needs still and have since purchased a copy of Neat Image Pro and use that for when I need things to be ultra-clean for my day to day stock photo work. That program is fantastic btw. Batch processing is seriously effective and I would say that it is at least as good as DxO Pro.

    2. The black and white sliders are seriously useful and I love having them to bits. So I am very pleased with them but they are a pretty basic feature found in most other programs. So this stays the same. Thank goodness the most expensive program available has this basic feature now.

    3. The Basic Colour Editor is a MAJOR improvement. I did not grasp the beauty of this when I first started using it. The speed and effectiveness of being able to use your mouse as an XY controller is a wonderful idea and puts fantastic use to a pre-existing tool that I did not have to relearn. Works extremely well. The fine-tune abilities for the movements show that it was not half baked. I hope to see this XY control available in other tools in the future! So good.

    4. OK, so it truly is hard to get excited about a company upgrading the crop tool. This being said the additions are very useful and speed things up quite a bit. Props to Phase One for possibly having the best crop tool on the market. Still not exciting but well-executed and it is great to have a company have taken care to essentially perfect one of the most basic tools that I use frequently. Good job.

    5. I honestly still don't use copy layers but I see this becoming useful to me in the near future. So I look forward to having it work more smoothly. No opinion there but this is a powerful feature and implementing this I am guessing was not an easy task.

So fair is fair and I just wanted to say that I was enjoying the updates and they were indeed improving my daily work. So I am grateful.

    Peace!
