And if I use an external EXIF editor to add/change some EXIF data would this be then reflected in MediaPro?

I've had some success adding EXIF data with ExifTool. Here is an example specifically what I've written so far:

    -Exif:Make=Pentax
    -Exif:Model=67
    -Exif:DateTimeOriginal="2012:07:09 00:00:00"
    -Exif:CreateDate="2012:07:09 00:00:00"
    -Exif:ISO=400
    -Exif:UserComment=Kodak Portra 400

In Organize Panel I can now find images by "Capture Date" and also by "Source Device". In the Info Panel the "ISO Speed" appears too. The film data that I put in User Comment doesn't seem to appear in Media Pro.

    You also have to do

    -exifVersion="0220"

to fool it into thinking it is a digital image and to get a capture date for a digital image. MediaPro needs that to sort on capture date. This took forever to figure out but seems to work. There may be other ways to do this but I couldn't find them.

It won't work on bmp images but seems to work on tif and jpg and maybe others.

If you haven't done so yet try "Sync Annotations..."? I am not sure if this works or not but it's worth a try.
