Unable to read DNG-files from photoshop
Hello,
Recently I discovered a free little program called "DNG recover edges". It recovers pixels that are part of a camera's file, but that are normally not shown due to a.o. cropping to the exact aspect ratio, in my case 4/3.
As far as I can tell it only works with DNG files that were created with adobe's camera raw.
Once modified, the DNG file shows áll the pixels, but CO4 will not open either this modified DNG file, or a standard DNG file created by Camera raw.
It says: failed to load image,
Does this mean that camera raw DNG files are not supported, because CO4 dóes open DNG files that it has created itself.
thanks
Chris

Did you apply compression during DNG conversion? Although I checked this with the CO4 beta only you need to convert with lossless compression for CO4 being able to open it. 0 -

Capture One already retrieves all of the pixels from its supported raw formats.
If you watch carefully as the previews load, you'll see each thumbnail shrink slightly (and its color improve). This happens as Capture One transitions from the in-raw preview generated by the camera which has a slight crop of the edges to its own internal preview which as access to all the pixels stored in the file.0 -

Yes, I tried lossless compression, (and tried all other settings, but the problem does not originate in any specific setting).
Capture one will not read the dng-file created by photoshop (camera raw 5.2), no matter what settings used. Although I should probably not post this info here, but rather in a support case, I will anyway (for once 😉 ):

By the way, Christopher: Capture One does not use the complete file, either in a DNG or in a Tiff or JPeg output. I've compared them with a converted DNG that was run through "DNG recover edges" and you see a slightly, though clearly larger image. To give you an idea of how much larger, or rather: how much is chopped of by default: camera raw or CO4 standard output from the raw file: 3648X2736 pixels. DNG run through Recover edges, same resolution (300) output: 3720X2800 pixels.

Different experience here:
I converted a Kodak SLR-C raw file (not supported by Capture One 4.x) with ACR 5.2 (CS4) to a DNG file and was able to open it in CO 4.5.2 (I use Mac).
I played with different settings of the DNG conversions like compression (none/lossless), linear image, embed original raw and JPEG preview (none/medium/large). The only option CO4 does not support is linear image. All other options provided DNG files that I could open and adjust without problems.0 -

Hmmm, maybe Capture One doesn't recover the edges of every raw format, then. But it does perform such a function on my Canon files.
I wonder if you submitted a feature request if it would be something Phase One would consider?0 -

I have no idea: I even wonder if Phase One would be allowed, as I read (from the maker of the program, who also developed adobe's camera raw) that these edges are cut of to ensure maximum quality for áll pixels, as well as to get the exact aspect ratio. If you're not really concerned about this exact aspect ratio, and come to the conclusion (as many seem to do) that the cropped pixels are high quality enough, then for tightly composed shots this program can be useful.
I would surely encourage phase one to use áll pixels from Olympus E3 Orf files, so if they read this forum...
As for CO4 not being able to open my converted DNG-files: I think I will simply wait for the upcoming release of version 4.6 and a fresh install.
best photographic wishes to all CO4 users in 2009!

The DNG implementation in Capture One is a very simple, none fancy and strait forward implementation according to Adobe standard (the makers you are referring to IS Adobe)
When it comes to CCD/CMOS you have the size of the chip and then what is referred to as Active pixels. We will in our implementation only display active pixels.
I am not convinced that files can be supported when run through your program "DNG recover edges". However with standard 100% DNG compliant files it will work except with two limitations
1. Linear DNG / demosaiced are not supported. (Confusing with DNG, it is not always RAW!)
2. DNG from competing medium format camera backs will not work. (Easy fix, buy a Phase One 😉0 -

Yes, it turns out they can!
Ulf, thank you for the response.
I tested again whether DNG-files created with CO4 can be run through "DNG recover edges", and this time it did work. Also the "modified" DNG files (nothing changes exept the inclusion of all available pixels) can be opened in CO4, with the new pixel count. So no need for Adobes Camera raw in this respect after all.
No dramatic gain, but if anybody ever just misses a wing-tip, or the tip of a mountain or tree, try this program out, it's free...

Interesting! Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!0 -
Version 4.5.1 windows has a problem reading DNG files.
I have reported it with sample files and they said it will be fixed in the next version !0
