I upgraded on the 18th of October from v4 to v5 after receiving a mail from PhaseOne advertising V5. Surely PhaseOne new V6 was coming and I would have preferred to wait to get v6.

It could also just be a mistake, I downloaded v6 after my "look for new software" tab indicated a upgrade. After installing the licensing procedure started and well now I am here....

Siegfried, contact Phase One directly in a support case.

Like a good soldier, I submitted a support case without first posting on this forum.

My purchase of C1P 5 was prompted by a solicitation to the Nikonians site for new customers. A fat, dumb, and happy user of Adobe products, I decided to buy based on the indications of present and future capabilities mentioned in the new Luminous Landscape tutorial on C1P v5. Learning curve was steep, but I thought it would be worth the effort. Especially since we were doing Level 3 (V5.2.1) enhancement releases, I guess I just assumed I could grow with the product.

I purchased on October 11, 2010. About 50 days ago.

The support team, always polite, informed me that I wasn't eligible for a free upgrade, but that I was welcome to use C1P version 5 as long as I wanted.

This is my first experience at being obsoleted in less than 60 days from purchasing a product. I hope it will be my last.

Having been enticed to upgrade to 5.2.1 on the 25th Oct by their "special offer" email, I do think it very unfortunate timing this new release, especially since the only reason I upgraded was that I was (maybe foolishly) expecting that a few more point releases to ver. 5 might actually lead to support of cameras I was thinking of upgrading to in the very near future. Now the only way to get camera support for these new cameras will be to upgrade to ver. 6 and hope they get around to it.

Though having dutifully put in a support case, apparently 6 days is too much leeway to extend their 30 day free upgrade policy. If I had paid for 10 pro licenses, then maybe I'd be treated differently [1] but as I'm just a lowly non-pro user who only originally paid for CO3LE, I'll have to write off the cost of to ver. 5 (for effectively less than a week's extra use) if I now upgrade to ver. 6, since I could have gone from ver. 3 to 6 for the same price as for ver. 5 to 6.

I would have been happy to pay the standard upgrade price for ver 3/4/5 to ver 6 and I don't expect to get ver 6 for the special offer price from ver. 3 to 5. It does however rankle to be lured into paying for a non-essential upgrade from ver. 3 to ver. 5 when I would have gone straight to ver. 6 without wasting money. It would be in Phase One's interest to counter the bad feeling generated by their timing of the promotional offer and the release of ver. 6, regardless of whether the timing was intentional or not. It just does not look good at all.

I have suggested in my reply to Support that a fair compromise would be to offer the people who were lured by the promotional offer to upgrade from ver. 3 to 5 just before the 30 day cut-off be allowed to upgrade to ver. 6 for the difference in price between the promotional offer and the current upgrade price from vers 3/4/5 to ver. 6, or basically 49-28=21 Euro + VAT. Still awaiting a reply on this suggestion.

    Cheers,
    Daniel.

"Some people have already contacted us and we have upgraded them at no charge, others have contacted us and we have had to say no. It all depends on the specifics... for instance, if you were given a free promotional key in the past few months and are now asking for further free upgrades the answer will be no without hesitation. On the other hand, if you purchased 10 Keys for a company just outside our cutoff, we'll help you out."

Out of curiosity, has anyone heard back on their support cases?

I submitted one directly since I figured that was the best idea, but I'm not sure how swamped they are at the office there.

I'm really hoping to get a super nice answer from them since I so recently bought v5 Pro! Like my buddy did...

Here's hoping... I did software licensing for a living, so I know how hard these decisions are to make on the business side. If I had just been a few hours more patient on the buying side...

Because a reply sometimes gets stuck in a spam filter, best is to login to your Phase One account and check the status online.

I'm only checking on My Support Cases for that very reason. It hasn't changed from In Progress, so I just wondered if they were really really swamped.

    Gregger,
The support team forwarded your case to the Sales department and they take some time to respond. You should have been informed that we were forwarding your case, for which I apologize. Please be patient as they will get back to you shortly.

No problem... thanks for your help! I'm just crossing fingers and hoping not to jinx anything. I missed seeing you guys in person at PhotoPlus and I think I missed out on the release news.

But hey, I was in Maui, so it wasn't all bad.

Do I also have to buy an additional license to upgrade from Capture One 5 PRO to Capture One 6 PRO?

If your CO5 Pro license does not have free upgrades (as the majority of CO5 licenses), an upgrade fee will bring you to CO6 Pro. Check your license status online at the Phase One site.

From your brief description it seems you have a Capture One 5 PRO Key. From your presence on the Internet you have access to download Capture One 5 PRO. If need be, download Capture One 5 and activate with your Key.

    Good morning, Drew

Does this mean that Capture One 6 PRO is a paid upgrade, or can I upgrade from Capture One 5 PRO?

Thanks for the quick response. Brian

To be clear no one is forcing you to upgrade. Downloading the upgrade is a choice you physically made and installing it was an additional step you intentionally took. Then, when you installed it you were asked if you wanted to replace what was assumed to be Capture One 5 to which you Agreed.
So, at present, if you do not wish to purchase the upgrade to Capture One 6, just download Capture One 5 and install it.

It is most likely a paid upgrade for you, but you if you are unsure you can create a support case and we can look into your specifics.

Drew - I did the exact same thing as NN260031UL. In the C1 preferences pane, it's usually an upgrade to your existing version. Add to that the fact that I had recently purchased C1 Pro 5 and I simply assumed that I would get a free upgrade to V6. I wasn't aware that notification of a paid upgrade would be via the preferences pane. Partly my fault because I'm used to Adobe and Apple products and they don't operate this way. When a new version of, let's say, Lightroom comes out, yes, you get an email, but that email directs you to their announcement web page or sales web page. My notification of C1 Pro 6 was a splash screen directing me to my preferences pane.
And let me just add... if C1 wasn't so good, I would never use it. Dealing with technical problems is a hassle and regarding the sales department.... forget it! I emailed sales a week ago and still haven't heard from them. I've never heard of a company of the stature of Phase One/Capture One that didn't use telephones. Frankly, I'm quite surprised!

If you created a support case, you have heard back from us or will shortly (within 24 hours at the busiest of times). We are a small team so Phone support needs to be reserved for Digital Back owners. If we have time and your issue necessitates it, give us your contact info in a case and we will call you back. Otherwise, create a support case and we'll get right back to you.
