CO Express 6 vs 7: missing tools
There are some very useful tools in CO Express 6 that I cannot find in CO Express 7:
1. “Remove Spotâ€
2. “Color Editorâ€
3. “System folders†in “Libraryâ€
1. As far as I understood from the comparison between CO 7 Pro and Express (http://www.phaseone.com/en/Imaging-Soft ... icing.aspx) “Remove Spot†was removed from CO Express 7. This is an unpleasant surprise, because I use this function from time to time.
2. I cannot find “Color Editor†tool as well. Is it possible to find it?
3. Is it possible to get “System folders†in “Library I would like to work with photos in folders directly. It is more convenient for me in comparison with importing photos to collections.

1. Correct. I apologize for the disappointment.
2. It's with the Color Tab right below White Balance.
3. Express 7 uses a Catalog workflow now as appose to "Session" workflow. As such it is not possible to browse through a tree view as you once could, it is now necessary to import images into the Catalog (either directly or referenced)0 -
Thank you for a quick response!
It seems that CO Express 7 does not suit my needs ☹️ It is putty, because I was waiting for CO Express 7 for a long time. An upgrade to CO Pro 7 costs too much. A price of LR is good, but I do not like it, I found CO is much more comfortable.0 -
Understandable.
You have 60 days of free trial on Capture One 7 Express so you can use it without limitation and if you change your mind, that's great but if not we wish you luck with whichever software meets your workflow needs.0 -
Yes, the 60-day trial period is the great chance to try all features of CO Express 7!
In my first post I wrote about “Color Editorâ€, but it was the mistake. I wanted to ask about 'Color balance'. How can I find it in CO Express 7?0 -
Sorry, another casualty but really more of a luxury item as you can achieve the same (although perhaps not as subtle or easily) with the White Balance. 0 -
Apparently I should upgrade to CO Pro 7.
I will wait for a voucher code that makes the price of upgrade more affordable 😊0 -

Hi,
this is terrible and the death warrant of COExpress for me. I'm such a fool and bought it without try it, because I never expect this (want use the new engine..).
Have you ever tried to import more then 50000 images? How many hours I have to wait ?
I have used COExpress for a long time, so I must search for a new RAW-Engine now (the pro-version is to expensive for me).
Too bad. 😡

Hi,
may I have a question what happens to photos where the spot removal tool was used in Express 6 and later imported to/re-converted in Express 7? All those adjustments are going to be lost???
Kind regards,
Jiri0 -

Hi Jiri,
Good question. Although I did not tried or tested this specific upgrade path, the general answer is YES.
If I for example open an image in Express that was edited in Pro with Pro specific adjustments, those adjustments are shown and applied during processing/export with Express. However, these specific adjustments can not be copied to another image or variant with Express.
You can run CO7 in trial mode (60-days) and test it.0 -

If you edit a picture with CO Pro and use all the features, these will also be shown in CO Express. But you cannot edit these features, or add new spots or other Pro features.0 -
It looks like I've also been foolish and rather assumed that Express 7 would have improvements over 6. Instead I find, after paying, that many of the tools I used are missing such as those mentioned as well as batch processing and direct output to JPEG instead of "exporting". If I can I will uninstall 7.1.1 and reinstall 6.4.1 and put the 69 Euros down to a bad experience.
Money I should have spent spent moving over to Lightroom.
Very disappointing.0 -
Hallo,
Try before you buy. There is a 60-days free trial. How come you guys have missed that?
Note that you can activate CO6 with your CO7 key.0 -
Another very very disappointed customer here. I never thought to "try before you buy", as I've been using C1 since forever and never for one minute thought Phase One would remove the things that make it faster and easier to use than Lightroom.
After 12 hours waiting for it to import 63000 photos, I gave up and went to bed. Who knows what time it finished?
The outcome is that it is now slower than a slow thing with its brakes on, and brings up a very annoying dialog every time I have finished with an image and want it "exporting".
I would stick with v6, but that doesn't support my 6D, so I'm ditching C1 and going to Lightroom.0 -

Well, for about the same cost I would guess you could have moved to C1 V7 Pro and stayed with sessions and had the advantage of the batch process and some other Pro features.
Your call of course.
Just a thought.

I used CO Express 4.8 and wanted to upgrade to 7. I tried the trial for version 7 and found out that I cannot do many of the things that I were able to do; ie. explore folders like Windows Explorer, batch process with a shortcut key in the background instead of exporting and having to deal with dialog, and many others. I do not like the catalog system at all since I have over 300k pictures. That's too bad because I really like Capture One. 0 -

Did you try the Pro option during the trial?
No need to use the Catalogue system. Batch outputs still there and a number of other nice things as well.
You might also be amazed at what it can do for some of your favourites from your huge collection of images. (Maybe all of them but that sounds like the task of a lifetime .... 😉 )

I split the difference. Use express 7 for new stuff going forward and keep my older photos in Express 6. Makes for a very manageable catalog to start out with.
So far it appears to be the most painless way to go for me. 😎0 -

Easy, Paul, when you use the trial you are using the Pro / full version, and in that version you have the "process" tab and you can work in sessions... ☹️
I can Live without Sessions, although i'm not very happy with catalogs, but not having the process Tab and the spot removal tool it's a major issue...0 -
When I buy upgrade to new version I always expect that I get better functionality than the old. It`s normal that new version have all features the old + new features. It`s stupid that in new version you remove some tools. So for me CO Express 7 is worse thant CO 6 and I never buy a 7.
P.s Working with Catalog is very unstable and unexpected - the folders disappeared, images disappeared without logical reasons etc. When I import images that I have in Catalog I got a duplicate even I use a replace options etc. For me working with Catalog is unusable :/ :/0 -

Absolutely agree. Trying this new version of CO Express is just a waste of time. This isn´t upgrade, this is downgrade from CO 6 Express ☹️0 -

I also burned my money on this upgrade 😡0 -
Bye bye Phase one. Hasta la vista.0 -
I join the "complains" above about the decisions of PhaseOne to change/limit the workflow of CaptureOne Express.
What is the rational explanation of that?
IMHO, many users of Capture One chose it over Lightroom for its lighter workflow.
The library workflow has other advantages like filtering, but is not as flexible as the "session" worfkow, based on the file system: the session allows e.g. moving/renaming files outside C1.
C1 pro is not an option for many amateurs, and the risk for Phase One is now that you force the library worflow, many would look for another alternatives!
Or those who will get used to the library might turn easier to Lightroom!
EDIT: I've installed Capture One Express 6.4.1 and continue the evaluation of both Express 6 and 7 in parallel. I used to use v4 and v5...
There are actually even more missing tools than pointed out by lightrack in the first message.
a. Session managment (3)
b. Color balance (2)
c. Focus Tool
d. Spot Removal (1)
e. Process Recipe/
f. Batch
g. Undo/Redo buttons
h. trash button
i. Rotate buttons
j. customize toolbar
f. workspace
These tools are available in Express v6 (and most of them in v5 as well!), but in v7 only in the Pro edition! The restriction is quite huge! Why such limitations?
It is a very strange decision from the management: some user might upgrade to the pro, but most of the other will either stick to the express and cry, or even leave Capture One completely!
The removal of the button is particularly ridiculous!
The v6 offer more tools and a more flexible worflow, but the v7 interface is a little clearer (label not bold), and the new C1 v7 engine with default settings is much better for skin color, noise reduction and highlight recovery!0
