Question to C1 Users: Dealing with the low quality preview
Howdy all,
I am currently gearing up for a trip through SE Asia (backpacker style) ending in Vietnam where I'll undoubtedly be taking thousands of RAW photos with my recently aquired Canon DSLR outfit. I am currently evaluating Mac-based RAW converter and workflow sotware solutions as an alternative to Photoshop CS2 (which I already own). I have downloaded the C1 LE 3.7.3 demo, and have found the image quality of RAW conversions to be superior in some cases when compared to the same image converted in Photoshop CS2.
My question to you, dear users (and forum readers), is: How do you deal or work with the fact that the \"large\" image preview in C1 is both low resolution -and- not very color correct? So far, I have found that only the Focus Utility window is the only way to properly preview all adjustments, including white balance and the exposure adjustments. Comparisons between preview images of a RAW file and it's processed TIFF counterpart (using 2-Up Preview in C1) show great visual differences, in particular - saturation and contrast is increased in the RAW preview image, and shadow/highlight detail is misrepresented as well.
The RAW preview quality is not due to my color profile settings, though, which is confirmed when I compare the preview of a processed TIFF image in C1 with the same image viewed in Photoshop CS2 - as they are 100% identical, I know that the profile setup is correct in both applications (see my PS note below on my color profiliing experience). So it seems that the greatest downfall of C1 versus Photoshop CS2 is the lack of a less-than-100% sized preview image which represents accurate color as well as shadows, highlights, & contrast. For me this is troublesome as my 12\" Powerbook does not have very much screen real estate space.
I'd appreciate any user's thoughts on this.

PS. Though I am just now delving into digital camera RAW shooting, I have been using SLR's and DSLR's for 15 years. Before leaving my job, I had been working the last 15 years as a Pre-Press/Imaging specialist, and was responsible for maintaining color accuracy and workflow at a color print shop. For over 8 years, I created custom icc profiles for almost everything at the shop, including a PhaseOne P25 back using the ColorEyes software. I'm not sure why I didn't notice the color inaccuracies of the C1 software preview image at the time, but I did not shoot with the P25 or use the C1 software on a daily basis.
On my portable system, I have profiled my LCD display with a Gretag Eye-One Display 2. I firmly believe all of my color settings are correct, but if you think something may be amiss, I'd appreciate any highly technical info/advice.
