White balance mode : Difference between cameras
Hi,
Doing some adjustments of White balance using the White Balance Tool into tab Color, I saw the proposed mode can be vastly different depending upon the camera used.
For example with a Nikon D4s you get :
- Original
- Incandescent
- Fluorescent cool white
- Sunny
- Flash
- Cloudy
- Shadow
and with a D7200 you get :
- Original
- Daylight
- Shadow
- Flash
- Fluorescent
- Shadow
- Tungsten
quite surprising as they are two Nikon using the same internal processor/engine (Expeed4). I di another check with a former photo taken with a D4, and here what a surprise I do get :
- Original
- Incandescent
- Sodium vapor lamp
- Warm white fluorescent
- White fluorescent
- Fluorescent cool white
- White of day fluorescent (literal translation)
- Daylight white fluorescent
- High temperature mercury vapor lamp
- Sunny
- Flash
- Cloudy
- Shadow
That is a huge difference between the D4 and the D4s !
I am not saying one is better than the other, but it woul be nice to have an explanation of this difference between the mode available into C1.

I believe that the options you see depend on the options available on the camera. I have a D7000 and A D7200. I get the same options for them (but listed in a different order). I also use a Canon S110 compact, and for that C1 lists rather more options including "Underwater" and two different fluorescent settings (but no Shade). These correspond again to the options that I can set on the camera.
I am not familiar with the differences between the D4 and the D4s, but I suspect that they may offer different presets, reflected in the list available in C1.
You may also find that the same setting such as "Daylight" sets to different values depending on the camera. For my D7000, C1 sets to 5208 Kelvin, and 0.0 Tint. For the D7200, it sets to 5195 K and -0.3 tint. I believe that this is because Phase One do their own testing of the cameras and set these defaults accordingly. (So I might copy a white balance setting from one image to others shot with the same camera, but not others shot with a different camera.)

i Ian,
Thank you for passing by.
There is no difference from the point of view of white balance between D4 and D4s, therefore my question. Even if I do understand people of Phase One are doing measurement at one point to set up the profile of the camera in order to have the best possible raw interpretation, this is located at the level of the tool name basic characteristics where one can find the ICC profile ( D4s Generic for example) and the curve (Auto, added shadow, high contrast, standard and linear response).
Since then, I do not se why D4 shall benefit a huge amount of white balance presets the D4s does not enjoy.
Can you list the white balance options proposed for the D7000, it could be interesting to compare to the one I have for the D7200. But only if we are on the same version of C1. I am running 8.3.3.30 .0 -
Yes. For my D7000, it lists
Shot
Cloudy
Daylight
Fluorescent
Flash
Tungsten
Shade
(in that order).
For the D7200 it lists
Shot
Cloudy
Daylight
Flash
Fluorescent
Shade
Tungsten
(in that order).

Hi Ian,
Thank you for the information. It is interesting to note the type and number of modes available for the D700 and D7200 are the same or so while for D4 and D4S they present a large difference in numbers and type; mainly fluo stuff in fact.
If someone in link with PhaseOne have an explanation to give to us I would be pleased to know about.0 -
The preset WB's are based 1:1 on what the specific camera offers.
We shoot all the different presets, when we have the camera in-house, and make sure the Kelvin values of those presets reflect the camaera's.0 -
Hi Christian,
Thank you for the clear answer given.0
