Do you Use Photo Mechanic with Capture One?
Hiya,
Does anyone on this forum use Photo Mechanic with Capture One?
I mean, do you use Photo Mechanic as the culling tool before importing the 'selected' images into Capture One?
I have come from a back ground of Lightroom and have always used Photo Mechanic as my pre raw converter sort and select tool. I find this a very efficient way of culling images from Wedding or Photo Story shooting and want to bring this workflow with Capture One.
The problem is I have having some issues with the imported images when initially processed through Photo Mechanic.
If I import a set of images directly into Capture One without using PM then all is well, but if I ingest them into PM cull to my selections, then import my selections I seem to get corrupt files.
This doesn't happen with Lightroom, so I was wondering if anyone else uses Photo Mechanic and what your experiences are.
Matt

Hi Matt,
I always use Photo Mechanic 5 before opening images in Capture One and I know there are quite a few other users here with similar workflow. I do not encounter corruption issues.
My workflow:
I import from card to computer with PM5, using the renaming feature of ingest.
Next, I add the IPTC metadata. I write this in the CR2 files, but I could choose for XML sidecar file as CO7 reads both.
Next, I through away the bad images. Sometimes I do the renaming after this stage.
Goodbye to PM5, hello to CO7, my workflow continues with a session and all the CO bells and whistles.
Issue I have with this workflow is that CO7 tags the images pink when I embed metadata with PM5 in the CR2 files. Second issue is that reloading the embedded metadata is not successful and prone to error (note: not recently tested with latest updates).0 -
The issue I am having is that when i import any images that have been 'selected' with PM all my imports in C1 turn purple. I am not sure how to attach a jpg to this post otherwise I'd show you.
What I do is this. I either ingest into a 'Shoot' folder on my HD or drag and drop from an SDHC card. I have 2 sub folders in my 'Shoot' Folder, (1) Raw, (2) To Edit. I then go through all the images in Raw and rate them either with a star or colour rating. Once I have culled the images and have a selection I drag and drop these selected images in to the (2) To Edit folder.
I then close PM and open up C1. I then import into Catalog all them images from the (2) To Edit folder, but all the images turn purple and this can not be corrected in C1 i.e. via WB or colour casts etc. It is very odd.
I assumed that C1 is pulling through something that is left in the image from PM but I can not work it out, and now you say that PM works fine I am more puzzled and desperate to get to the bottom of it.

I suggest you do some trial and error testing. Break down each step you do in PM5, and perform each in succession to a different folder. Next, open each folder with Capture One and see when it goes wrong.
By the way, what raw files are you working with? Is your PM version up to date, same for CO7?
Showing a screenshot in this forum is easy if you can make an image viewable through a link in the internet. Place the link in a post. Use the Img tag (top edit window) around the link.0 -
Thanks Paul,
I will try that later and see at what point in the PM process something is happening to create the purpling.
My gut feel is when I have added a rating and moved my selection into another folder, I think PM adds a new file format next to the Raw, and that is what is being picked up. We'll see.
I am shooting Fuji's at the moment and importing .RAF files.0 -

You might want to look at whether PM writes to the RAF files or to adjacent XML files.
Are you on PM5 and are you up-to-date?0 -
So, Photo Mechanic and Capture One is working perfectly together now.
It is in fact some images within my hard drive that if I import into Capture One directly they turn Purple, so there must be something in the images format that is causing the purpling effect.
Well, a positive is that I know that I can use Photo Mechanic, but I am now back to square one to work out why……

OK, I think i have sussed it. I think it is to do with the fact some images are in .DNG format. I have just tried to import a set of images which includes 50% in .RAF and 50% .DNG and the .RAF files were all find, but the .DNG were all Purple.
Sorry, but I am a complete newbie just trialling Capture One and have just assumed that .DNG would work.
Do you know of this issue? Is there anyway I can fix it?
Regards

The dng support is terrible. My dng images created from Lightroom a few years back are unusable in CO.
I have been using CO for several months but last weekend I went back to Lightroom as its just so much more reliable and with some tweaking I'm getting the same kind of IQ and better colours. I also don't need PM to rename my files as LR can do it for me. CO file naming is too limited.0
