Variants Question
I edited the original file and then created a variant.
1) The variant does not retain the changes from the original, I think it is possible to have it copy the settings from the original file is it not? If so, what change do I need to make and where?
2) The variant has a different WB value and I wanted to copy that setting back onto the original file, but when I use any of the copy apply tools the variant will not copy its settings back on the original file.
thx

When you create a variant you have to choice between new and clone variant. The new variant is without adjustments made to the originating variant, the clone variant does have all the adjustments from its origin.
You can copy/apply adjustments between variants like you do between different exposures, either through the adjustments clipboard or without it, a.k.a. local copy and apply (the double arrow per tool). Also, the Edit All Selected toggle applies.0 -
Thanks Paul.
2nd part from original question, could you try and recreate this scenario on your computer?
Edit a file and change the WB on the original file, then create a variant, do not clone the variant from the original so it appears as the original file did. Then try and copy the WB from the variant to the original file and see if it changes the original file and matches the variant.
What I am experiencing is that the variants WB is not being copied onto the original file, which seems odd to me.0 -
Doug, I ran the scenario from your 2nd question in multiple ways. I had no problem whatsoever copying the white balance adjustment from one variant (the first one in this case) to the next (new variant).
I tried different scenarios here, like copy and apply with/without Edit All Selected and the Local Copy & Apply. All worked fine and as expected.
One setting to check from your Adjustments Clipboard tool, context menu (from the small triangle at the right in the header): Autoselect Adjusted.
In general, when you have a problem with copying adjustments through the clipboard, first check whether AFTER the copy command the adjustment is checked on the clipboard. If not, the Autoselect Adjusted setting might be switched off.
Note that a few items on the clipboard are NOT auto-selectable (in particular metadata).
Q1: Does copying white balance work fine between variants from different exposures (a.k.a. different images)?
Q2: Is it only the white balance the won't copy?0 -
Hi Paul,
Thanks for doing that for me. But just to be clear, did you or could you try that experiment in reverse? Explicitly, after changing the WB on the original and then creating a new variant, copying the WB value from the variant back onto the original, e.g. Original file's WB beginning value is 4500 and is changed to 5500; next create variant so that its value is 4500 and copy this WB value back to the original file so that the original value should now be changed back to 4500.
In any and all my attempts, the variant so far has been unsuccessful in copying this setting, nor any other value back onto the original file.
Thanks for all the help....

Hi Doug, I do not have to test the reverse process as you described, because I know it won't work and I might be able to explain that. I has nothing to do with multiple variants from a single exposure or from different exposures.
I you have a setting - say: white balance - and it is current 'as shot', you can not apply that state a variant/image. For Capture One it is as there is no adjustments, hence nothing to copy. This applies to all adjustments you can make to an image (exposure, rotation, you name it).
I can think of circumstances that you however might want to do this. I have two workarounds for you:
1) Make the smallest possible adjustment and copy that
2) Use reset adjustment for a specific tool from the Local Copy/Apply tool set.
Hope this clarifies.0 -
Thank you very much Paul!
I understand your point and thank you for explaining and making it clear.
Sometimes the planning takes a backseat 😄 to "blurry eyes" and revisiting an image with rested and clear ones...
It would be advantageous if rather than having copy/apply "adjustments" but to copy/apply "settings". I speak of this realizing that there are is more to how things work than just a simple fix or change. And I will submit a feature request...
Thank you again for your help and insight.0
