Importing-naming

I often have to switch between different sessions and import pictures from CF-Cards to the different sessions.
In the old days the files were named automatically according to the session (plus correct counter).
Now the import-module sticks to a manually choosen name.
Do I miss a preset were I can change this? I always forget to type the name manually and have lots of trouble with wrong names now!

    I'm basically wondering the same thing. Has anybody figured out how to have the files named based off of the session name plus counter instead of job name plus counter?

    Currently this feature does not exist... basically the setting for naming is controlled in the main preference plist file for Capture One so it will remain constant across sessions.

    But it worked well in 3.7.
    Now for me it feels not like a missing feature, more like a bug.

    Please give us sessions, the same means to create sessions, and readable fonts in dialogue boxes, as they were in v3.7.9 Pro, with the same folder template, or a user definable template. I've got thousands of sessions with these templates (that is the respective folder names for a given session), and to my mind it invites user error to change these folder names. Although I do my conversions in v4.8.1 Pro, with its excellent output, I still create my sessions in v 3.7.9 because it has the same session folder template that I've been using for years.

    Hi Ralph,

    I'm not sure I follow you here... the only changes to default session folder structure is that the name for "Processed" is now "Output" and there is also a designated move-to folder.

    Thank you for your comments.

    Let me have the same means of creating a session, a dialogue box with legible fonts, and the choice of having a template with the same (identical) names for session folders as well as the same number of session folders (as an option). With thousands of session folders existing on my drives, this small change of "Processed" to "Output" is a recipe for late-night, brain-dead user error (or perhaps I shouldn't generalize beyond the present user). Also, for my purposes generally, the 'move to ' folder is not often necessary, so it would be good to make its presence (or absence) optional. As I said in my previous post, I'm using v3.7.9 as a standard. This may sound extremely trite, but it would be helpful, and I would certainly be grateful for your understanding.

    Hello Jon,
    other changes for example are:
    Importing from a card reader, now the files don't go to the capture folder by default, they just go to the session-folder.
    In 3.7 I could switch between different sessions and the files were named using the session-name and correct counter. Now I have alway to type in the correct name before importing. Makes a lot of work and alot of mistakes if you often nhave to change betweeb session.

    I rename images on import (with PhotoMechanic by the way) in the format starting with my 2 initials, followed by date of creation (yymmdd), dash, 3-digit sequence number (starting 001 per day). Summary (of first image today): PS090922-001.ext
    The file name does not change on output, only the extension does.

    I take it you do not use Sessions? You use Photmecanic to import to disk and then basically you browse the images using Capture One?

    May I ask what DAM program you use to find old pictures etc? I have lightroom but maybe there is something more lightweight?

    if its of any help ,
    I import all shots in apertue , in folder by Camera and yearmonth/day. so : A900/ 200909/22
    this way I have all raws cataloged

    Then I process in C1 4 pro , with raws in their actual location
    Finished work goes tiff16 to a folder called from C1 project/xxx
    I import dat folder to aperture without changing location .
    In aperture dust clean, some nick sof or what ever needed
    and print

    This way all material is cataloged in one only program and processing is done without moving anything and only one conversion to tiff.

    I don't and apparently it does not bother me enough to setup DAM.

    Thats sort of is what I would prefer to do with Lightroom instead of Aperture which you use. Problem is that Lightroom on import does something to the raw files and also you cannot to my knowledge edit those files using Capture One from inside Lightroom. You get the option to edit them with lightroom adjustment applied first, which is not what I want. If lightroomm could allow me to import and edit untouched/virgin raw files that would be perfect.

    I have considerered 1. using Photmecaninc to import. 2. Delete and process files in capture One and 3. import the processed files into lightroom but to be honest it is just too many programs and steps. I am leaning on going back to using Lightroom and Photoshop only. Time will tell, but my guess is that Lightroom given time will soon be able to process raw files just as good as Capture One.
