Crashes over the network. MacOS
I've been a Media Pro user since iView version 1. I have been struggling with stability issues since 2012 that each upgrade has failed to resolve. I've had several email discussions with tech support, who insist that no one has stability problems. I guess they don't read this forum.
So, I'm asking anyone with multiple users connected to a MacOS network to, please, share with me their configuration, if, indeed, they have a stable installation of Media Pro.
Much appreciated.

Hi Jim,
Unless I missed something in the recent updates iView > Expression Media > Media Pro doesn't work well over a network. You probably know the following...:- Only one person can access a catalog at a time
- When more than one person opens a catalog they will have read only access
- When more than one person has a catalog open the first person can only save changes when everyone else closes theirs
- Mac and Windows map networks differently in the catalog. You may need two versions if you're in a mixed environment
- iView introduced the Notepad feature to share selections among groups, including the free Reader app
- If a Media Pro crashes it leaves a hidden file* behind that makes the Catalog read-only until that file is deleted
*The hidden file is the catalog name with a dot prefix. E.g. if you're catalog is named 2016-images the hidden file will be ".2016-images".0 -
Thanks, roberte, for the review. I wasn't aware of the notepad feature and the hidden .name file when MP crashes. What is your workaround for crashes over the network? How else can we use MP; or, do we use something else, like Photo Supreme which has a server version? Other choices, Extensis Portfolio and Canto Cumulus are expensive for our small business and overkill when we have only 4 users. Suggestions, please.
Or, do we lobby PhaseOne to make the fix? Surely you and I are not the only users in the MP community to use the software over a network.

The only way I made it work over a network was to not try to make it work over a network. Media Pro will not work reliably or be very stable.
I created a (read only) Working Catalog Folder on the server.
Everyone downloaded the catalogs, logged off server and worked locally.
Searches are saved to a new catalog locally.
Editing and keywording tasks are saved to the previously downloaded catalog (User catalog).
For image download:
Log on to server and download high res files from server using Media Pro Action-Transfer command.
Delete catalog
For editing and keywording:
Log on to server. Save User catalog to Working Catalog Folder-TEMP
I managed the catalogs so I would go to the Temp folder and check the User Catalog. IF everything was ok....I merged it with the Master Catalog and deleted the User Catalog. Then notify everyone of the catalog update. They then had to download the new catalog.
The only time Media Pro works over a network is when it is downloading files from a catalog of previously selected images.
I disconnect from hard drives, networks or anything else that contains the photo archive when I edit, search or import Actually just about everything except download.
I got tired of doing all the work for media pro, so did everyone else. People I work with revolted and went another direction.0 -
What has worked for over a network in the past is: - Users download a zipped copy of the catalog from a read-only directory (prevents people accidentally running the catalog on the server)
- Users open the catalog on their computer and have access to the assets on the server or...
- If you don't want unlimited access users request assets via the Notepad feature and an admin delivers them
- When the catalog is updated users are notified to download the new version
Media Pro really is a single user application. Previously I've consulted with small businesses using iView, Media Pro, etc, over a shared network. Bottom line it's better to look elsewhere for a network solution. Most solutions in a similar price range are open source like ResourceSpace and you pay for support. Otherwise there are hosted solutions like PhotoShelter Libris ($3 000+). You're right Portfolio is expensive ($20 000+) but does work and is now only a server application.0
