Keywords
Just started using Capture 4, having previously used Aperture and miss being able to use keywords. Am I missing something or can anyone suggest a workaround?

I worked with Aperture for a few months but abandoned it. That program does many things (file browsing, keywording, organizing, raw processing, etc.), but it simply isn't the best at any of them (IMHO).
C1 pretty much concentrates on delivering quality conversions via its serviceable browser. I use Photo Mechanic for ingesting, quick browsing and initial keywording - and iView Media Pro/Expression Media for cataloging. This way, I get the best of all three worlds.
Using Aperture or Lightroom, I found myself settling for less - which is more in the eyes of many others who like the convenience of the all-in-one approach.0 -
I have a similar toolset. However, there are some problems with this approach:
(1) At least with Nikon NEF files with encrypted white balance (such as from the D2X), if an image is shot with Auto WB and IPTC metadata such as keywords are written to the NEF file using a tool like Photo Mechanic (or Media Pro/Expression Media), the white balance information in the file is completely destroyed in Capture One PRO 3.7.x (such that setting WB to As Shot turns the image completely green). This problem was reported a while ago to Phase One whose response was not to shoot in Auto WB. Not exactly a solution.
(2) Capture One PRO 3.7.x and AFAICT Capture One 4 don't read .xmp sidecar files, rendering that option useless for keywording prior to RAW conversion and having the keywords carried through.
(3) Capture One 4 doesn't have the problem in (1) above, however it doesn't carry any IPTC information that was embedded in the NEF through to the converted TIFF.
I'd really like to find a good way to do initial keywording in Photo Mechanic (or any other tool) and have the keywords carried all the way through the rest of the workflow. However, the only way I have found that does this is a DNG workflow (in general, such as with Bridge/ACR/Lightroom; I haven't tested this in Capture One 4).
Can you share how you are doing this as it would help solve one of my major workflow challenges? Or are you using Photo Mechanic to select, Capture One to process, then Photo Mechanic to add IPTC to the converted TIFFs/JPEGs?
Thanks,

For me the answer is basically yes. I use Photo Mechanic to enter metadata in the raw file. Unfortunately, CO4 is not passing this information through to TIFF/JPEG as CO3.7.x LE/PRO does. If I really need the metadata from PM I export it as XMP and import it with Photoshop or Bridge. Or I use CO3.7.x. I expect this is currently in development for the Pro version and will probably be integrated in CO4 (non-Pro) as well. Just my 2 cents, no confirmation of Phase One.0 -

Chris,
Yes, this is what I'm doing for now. It's a workflow hassle, but what are you gonna do? The only other converters I'm satisfied with (Capture NX and Raw Developer) also pose problems. RD, like C1, doesn't pass along the embedded info. NX ... well, I generally work with more than a few files at a time.
Hopefully, C1 or RD will come up with a fix for this issue. Whoever does it first wins, as far as I'm concerned.0 -
Also, I did test the DNG route and got the same undesired results. Doubt that I would've gone in that direction anyway. 0 -
Hi,
If using Capture One with Nikon I set Photo Mechanic to make sidecars (shudder) rather than embed IPTC to avoid the white balance bug in C1. Then in PM I sync IPTC from RAW to JPEG. Go to Tools > Update IPTC/XMP.
IPTC is sacrosanct. Not meaning to be rude but Phase One have yet to demonstrate they really understand "workflow".

Robert,
I switched back to sidecars (cringe) after reading about potential problems with C1 and altered NEFs. I used that update tool you suggested back when I moved from sidecars to embedded IPTC, but hadn't thought about using it for this. Thanks for the tip.
I'll be glad when some brilliant mind gets this IPTC chaos sorted out. Not holding my breath, of course.0
