Unknown icon on thumbnail (looks like a gear wheel)

On some of my thumbnails a gear icon has appeared. What does this mean and how do I get rid of it? It is not on all the thumbnails.

  Thumbnail icon: Processed
  
  Processed: An orange cog icon will appear in a thumbnail while the file is being processed. The icon will turn white once processing is complete.
  
  This icon also signifies that the file has a 'Variant Process History' that the user can access by selecting Adjustments>Process History.

  
  
  The only way I've found to get rid of them is to clone a variant of the image (which will not have the icon) and then delete the original variant that does have the icon - which is a bit of a drag if there are a lot of them. I may have missed and easier way, however.

  This means that you have processed this file. If you click on the menu Adjustments - Process history you can see how many times you have processed this file and when. Here you can also clear the history.
