Bizarre bug - CO creating random variants on import.

Have you double checked what is happening with your remote Preview cache?

Since previews are, potentially, disposable (they can be recreated on demand) you could disable the symbolic links (or just create a new small catalogue as a first test) to see if anything changes.

Alternatively consider whether there is something going on with the Sidecar Sync process. Duplicate file names and cached previous updates? (I have no idea as I don't use the feature but suggesting things may prompt some ideas of your own ...)

Thanks for the suggestions - ran a few tests:

Created a test catalog + imported my images as normal + allowed previews to be generated = no strange variants.
Created symbolic link and stored previews elsewhere + imported images + preview generation = no strange variants.
Tried both with 'include existing adjustments' checked and unchecked, and storing the files on the system drive, an attached drive and in the catalog.

    Went back to master catalog:
Opened master catalog + imported same images as above = strange variants.

I'm doubting it's preview related at this point but may still be. I don't have any sidecar files on my memory card, doubt something's overwriting anything. I'm stumped at this point. I've spent AUD$380 on this program and it's driving me nuts ☹️

The "blue" images are not showing an "adjustments applied" icon. Are these all the same file types?

Tricky to tell much about what to suggest without file names and other stuff that might help to offer ideas about what to look for.

However, on the basis of your testing it might be worth looking into the Catalogue file's integrity as a starting point by running a verification check.

If that comes up with nothing and solves nothing I think the logical thing to do would be to move to a new Catalogue since your test Catalogue seems to be OK.

You might also create a Support Case if you have not already done so, and ask the Support Team to take a look at the existing catalogue file.

My guess would be that there are some internal links in the catalogue (linking files and perhaps bits of files as stored on the drive) that are incorrect. Were any of the files added to the catalogue before you came up with the symbolic link process involved in this strangeness?

    Thanks for the advice SFA.

The catalog verified fine - I've imported the catalog to a new one, didn't realise it would only take 20 minutes! Seems to have resolved the problem. Who knows what the issue was, there's a few too many unknowns in this equation I think.

For the record for anyone searching this in future - save your old catalog away somewhere, create a new one, open it and select:

file > Import Catalog > Capture One Catalog..

Your settings, metadata and images will be transferred at their current location and if it's anything like my case it'll fix the problem. 15k images took me about 20 minutes to import.

Thanks again SFA, I've lodged a tech thing with phase one, I'll hold on to the old catalog in case they need to tear it apart.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

It was certainly a strange problem.

Now, hopefully, you can enjoy the pleasure of using C1 without the strangeness.
