I'm new: basic workflow /catalog question
Howdy!
-If you already have a library on your computer, it's best to use a CATALOG to access the images through Capture One, yeah? Because when using Sessions I couldn't see a way to import the images without actually duplicating them into the CaptureOne Capture folder.
-After you are "finished" with a Session... what are you meant to do? If you close it on CaptureOne then you'll have to either re-import the files if you want to work one them again or create a catalog and import them into that. Or you could leave the session going but then you'll have a bazillion sessions going?
Thanks! Sorry, I'm new!

Hi!
No need to apologize.
There are various possible workflows.
Some info about mine:
I'm using sessions for my actual work.
- My sessions are on local storage.
- My session images are on local storage, too. But not in the session's own folders.
- I never import anything into my sessions. I just open image folders on my disk using the library tool.
- I have one session per shooting and I only open the one I want to work on.
- I move tethered shots to my own folders after the shooting if I didn't change the capture folder before.
- Opening an image folder in a new/different session gives me all the adjustments made in the other/previous session.
I have catalogs for the old stuff.
- I have more than one catalog.
- My catalogs are referenced. I maintain an external folder structure for my images.
- My images are on external, mobile storage.
- My catalogs are on local storage. At least the ones I actually need.
In both cases I sync between two computers.
- Sync must be a replacing sync. Overwrite newer files, delete non-existing, and so on.
- Incremental sync and bi-directional sync just mess up the relations between database, sidecars and images.
- For my local sessions, I sync image folders and session folders.
That's just one workflow.
You'll need to figure out what works for you.

One option when you are finished with a session is to import the photos you want to keep into a catalog. You can either import the whole session, or just, say, the Selects and Output folders. Another possibility (this is what I do) is to just leave your sessions as they are and not import them at all. (I use Media Pro for asset management.) If you organise your folders logically, they are easy enough to find.*
There is a good tutorial on Sessions and Catalogs here . Well worth watching as it explains how to get the best of both worlds.

*I organise my images in folders by date so I have, for example,
2017A January
> Capture
> Output
> Selects
> Trash
2017B Visit to India
> Capture
> Output
> Selects
> Trash
2017C Spring
.... etc.
So my sessions are called 2017A, 2017B, etc
It works for me.0 -
Both of the above are perfectly good approaches.
You can import to a session (there are some interesting possible benefits for new imports where you do not already have the file on disk), reference to a folder and its images by making it a "Favourite" thus creating a link in the session or just open the folder and image, no link of any sort, work on the image(s) and leave it at that. Useful if you want to test something for example.
All edits are kept local to the image in all cases. That makes things very flexible.
A file imported to the the default Session folder structure is not limited to the session nor constrained to be worked with only within C1.
There is more to have fun with but probably best to let you think about the current answers before adding anything more.

I've always used a single session, and pointed toward the folder with the images I want to work on after culling in BreezeBrowser Pro. (C1 creates all the sub folders for me, and I output to custom folders) 0
