Custom fields
24' iMac; OS 10.5.8 started with iViewMediaPro
In addition to archiving digital pictures, I archive old family pictures, negatives, positives, and documents going back 150 years.
I scan to a folder in Bridge. I open Expression Media 2, move the pictures to it, and put in my information. In addition to choosing from the Hide/Show Fields, I use 4 custom fields. I then sync the info to the pictures (no sidecars—xmp files). I seldom save the catalog at this point. Having synced the information to the pictures, I move the pictures to an appropriate folder.
When I am ready for a catalog, I move the synced pictures into a new catalog and save the catalog.
MP1.0 and 1.1 do not save Custom Fields to the pictures.
I just tested a folder of 30-year-old scanned color negatives. I had an EM2 catalog showing the Custom Fields. I moved the same pictures to a new EM2 catalog, and the Custom Fields were there. I did a save-as trial of the EM2 catalog, opened it in MP1.1, and the Custom Fields were there. From the MP1.1 I synced to the pictures to see if this could be done. It couldn't.
I opened a new MP1.1 catalog, moved the same pictures from Bridge, and the Custom Fields were not there. Yes, they show in a new EM2 catalog.
Historical archives need custom fields.
What am I missing?

Oops, I was wrong.
The Custom Fields do NOT show in the new EM2 catalog after syncing them in MP1.1.0
