How to find variants?

tl;dr: How do I show only variant copies of images - quickly - while on a shoot with client in front of computer?

Detailed version:
I was on a shoot and art director is making star selects as we go. I made a smart folder to show the one-star images. AD asks to see both color and black&white options. I select all and clicked in the menu: Image>New Variants. I see that the new variants were made because the preview thumbnails all have a "1" in the upper right corner, but I can't see the variants. They weren't added to the smart folder so I have to go back to the main folder with over 600 other images, now I have to scroll around (standing next to AD) to find 20 of them and carefully reselecting them to give them a color tag. This is super tedious and looks so amateurish.

Is there a quick way to show ONLY the new variants (or any variants, for that matter) in a given folder? Also, is there a way to automatically keep new variants in the same smart folder that I'm viewing currently?

Not a solution for searching your new variants with the workflow you used. But a little change could help you.

New variants have no tag and no rating.
Cloned variants have the original tag and rating.

Would it be OK for you to use cloned variants instead of new variants to start your new edits with? They will have the proper tag and rating and automatically appear in your smart folder. If you need it, 'Reset Adjustments' will not reset tag and rating.

I usually start with assigning 1 star to all my images. Then I start rating the good ones higher and tag them. I can easily find any new variant, because it has no tag and no rating.
