Nikon Picture Control Etc.
Do any of the features built into Nikon cameras such as their Picture Control and Active D-Lighting transfer across (used by) into Capture One or should I just turn these features off?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Picture Controls ("Picture Styles" in Canon-speak, in case any other Canon users are reading this) are metadata-based adjustments that only Nikon's own software can understand and apply - they're literally meaningless and invisible to Capture One, so can be left on or switched off as you see fit. In fact, leaving them on is useful from the point of view of "chimping".
ADL (which broadly equates to Canon's Highlight Tone Priority, HTP) actually under-exposes the files by up to a stop - the files are then equalised by the camera company's converter back to a nominally correct exposure.
Again, only the manufacturer's software can make these adjustments automatically (probably adding some additional processing to address the likely increase in noise caused by lifting shadows by up to a stop), so this one probably does need to be turned off if you're not converting the files in Nikon's software - you're just providing Capture One with an under-exposed file...
Now with this said, it probably doesn't matter that much if you leave ADL on - it really depends on what you're shooting and where the ISO is - but HTP is definitely off on all of my Canons.0 -
Keith,
Thank you for that information, it was very useful.0
