Adopting existing folder structure on import
Hello,
Wondering if there is a way to import an already organized folder structure with subfolders into C1 while maintaining the hierarchy? In this example I would like to import Las Vegas and Paris will keep all images and folders. Ideally I would like to import 2017 and have everything.
For example
2017
- Las Vegas
- WPPI
- Fashion Shoot
- Paris
- ICLA Shoot
So far it seems to import all the images in the subfolders into one single folder.
Thanks in advance for the advice
Troy

Hi Troy,
If your pictures are already on a disk with your hierarchy, you just have to import with the option "current location" as destination. As a consequence, you catalog will be "referenced", and not "managed", i.e. the images will stay on your disk.
Then, in the library, you open your folder, and that's all.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I tried that and all the images are imported at their location. I know they haven't moved because when I right click an image and do "Show in Finder" the image hasn't moved. However, I see no folder structor in the left under "Library" I see "All Images" and "Recent Imports"
Is there an option Im missing?
I have tested in both the Sessions and Catalogs. Seems that only catalogs allow importing at location. Sessions would would as well but don't see how that works either.
Thanks again for the advice.

With a session you can just navigate to the folder and open it (usually making it a Favourite) and you will get the session connection.
The only thing that is missing in that process, compared to Importing, it the option to apply renaming and presets/styles on import. However you can choose whether to make use of any pre-existing C1 edits that have been applied to the files.
The renaming and presets/styles features are not really a big deal since batch renaming and batch style application can be applied. Of course renaming may no be something that want to happen anyway when using an external folder which, presumably, may be shared with other applications.
You may also be using sidecar files so even things like copyright data and similar could be synchronised with existing information form other sources if required although adding it within C1 is not a huge task.
Other actions that might be applied as part of an import process - e.g. lens correction if you have not turned it off, etc. - will be invoked anyway. I assume you would already have a backup policy in place for the folders. No different to a referenced catalogue in that respect.
The only serious consideration for session use with folders that are not embedded in the session folder structure is to understand that it is very easy to move a fully self contained session around storage locations as needed. Just grab the top level folder and move/copy it and everything else follows.
With folders external to that structure the references will be consistent but nothing moves - as expected of course.
But if you move the referenced folder OUTSIDE of the controls built into the session the session will of course lose track of it. No real problem - just find it again and all will be well. Session edit instructions will be stored in subfolders within the referenced folder.
HTH.

Hi Troy,
Yes, in the "Library" tool, there are three items : catalog collections at the top (where you find "All images" and "Recent imports"), "user collections", AND "folders". It is "folders" which is relevant for you. Just open it.

When using a catalog, you need to enable 'Show Folders Hierarchy' from the 3-dots menu to see the complete folder tree in the 'Folders' section of the 'Library' tool.

Thanks for all the advice and patience. Feel like such a green horn on C1. LOL.
I am not having any luck however. Here is a link to a screen capture.

I created a new Catalog:
Created and Album called "TEST"
Imported image while choosing to keep images at their location and put in selected Album. Once imported, selecting the options panel or 3 dots show the "Show hierarchy" is selected.
I only see images in the or recent folders. Nothing shows in the TEST album or Folders.
Thanks again for any guidance!

Images can be put into albums manually, or 'smart' by filter criteria. They can be in multiple albums.
I see in the screenshot that the 'Macintosh HD' tree in the 'Folders' section is collapsed (arrow head pointing right).
What's behind it when you click the arrow head?

When i imported my referenced library for the first time, i just clicked on the plus button in the folders section and then selected the root folder on my drive, include subfolders, and then "open", and after 30 minutes or so, previews and folder structure are ready to browse in Capture One (in the folders section).
User collections is *only* something i use to make smart albums of my color tags, lens and Camera model etc.0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone. After much playing its making sense.
