Mac Pro?
I apologize if there are similar posts - the words "Mac" and "pro" appear too often in these boards to allow me to search for them.
I am looking for ways to increase productivity in our high-volume studio.
On our current iMacs
3.4 Ghz Intel core i7
24GB RAM
SSD
Phaseone P30+ & 645DF+
We can process out 1:1 TIFFs and 30% jpgs at about 10.24 seconds simultaneously
We shoot and process at the same time as a part of our workflow
It is my understanding that CO7.2.2 can now take advantage of both GPU in the new Mac Pro through Using OPENCL, but can only take advantage of a certain number of CPUs.
Is this correct? and if so, would we save money and increase productivity by purchasing the 6 core option intend of a 12 core since each core in the "lesser" version has a higher ghz? Money is not so much an obstacle as long as we are making return on investment. If we can save $2-3k though I would like to.
Has anyone done any real world - tests with these machines yet?
It has to be a mac - our workflow is dependent on it.
Thanks in advance.

CO 7 will
- use all available CPU cores for processing
- not use more than 1 graphics adapter/GPU. If multiple adapters are present, CO will chose the fastest one (measured by internal benchmark in CO), if the adapter meet CO minimum requirements.
If You process a high volumes of images, I would go for the fastest config available to You. That goes for CPU, GPU, and also SSD capacity (because a slow disk (or network location) will be the bottleneck in the new Mac Pro's).0 -
So...which Mac Pro model will process files faster? The quad core 3.7ghz, 6 core 3.5 ghz, or the 8 core 3.0 ghz all with the D700 GPU. I'm wondering what the trade off is going from faster chip speed with fewer processors to slower chip speed with more processors. 0 -
Dear Roger,
I have the 6 core with the D500, 1TB SSD and 64GB RAM, and it is indeed a very fast mashine.
However, the stability with C1 Pro is so bad that it is not possible to get anything done.
C1 Pro chrashes within minutes, and I struggle even to import images.
You may want to hold off for a while until Apple and PhaseOne get things sorted out on the new Mac Pro.
It will import the first few images, then you get the dreaded spinning "beach ball", and then C1 hangs forever, and need to be force quit.
I need to restart to continue, and I am able to import a few more images until it hangs again.
After four weeks of trying, I have not been able to move my image catalog from my old Mac Pro 3.1 to the new one.
I think this is related to the new Mac Pro, since everything works fine on my MacBook Air that I use in the field.
Best regards

Trond,
If you're having such issues why have you not created a support case?
We would certainly be interested in knowing what is going on with your system as we have the exact same here and it's been working without issue since day 1.0 -
Dear Drew,
I have not created a support case since the problem is so vague, that I do not know what to report.
Typically it happens during import of my image database.
C1 will import approx one image per second for a few thousand images, then it slows down until it hangs, and OSX activity monitor shows C1 as "not responding".
CPU utilisation of C1 is still at 100%, but disk access activity, both read and write drops to zero.
However, I have sent probably close to 50 crash reports to PhaseOne in the dialog box that pops up when C1 crashes.
I have provided my name and contact detailes, including e-mail, and a description of what led to the crash.
I have heard nothing from the C1 team.
I am sure if you check with them, they are able to locate my crash reports.
Best regards

Trond,
Of course we check them but as we offer a direct path for contacting Phase One concerning Technical issues, it's up to you to create a support case. Otherwise fixing the issue isn't seen as a priority.
Please create a support case and provide us with your Log files.0 -
Dear Drew,
I sincerely hope that the C1 software team will prioritize and fix the problem if they find it serious!
And I think it is, since I have wiped the new Mac Pro completely several times, and have nothing else than OSX and C1 on it.
I suspect interaction with the Apple graphics drivers for the D500 GPU, which seem to be quite shaky stuff at the moment.
Best regards

Trond,
We'll address it appropriately. Again, we have the same machine with no issues so I am inclined to think it is not a universal issue. Create a support case and we'll have a look.0 -
I have the 4-core Mac Pro with D300. Stability is great (I'm working with sessions). Performance is great. Open CL sometimes makes faults and needs to be turned off for processing. 0 -
Dear Tilman11,
I have tried sessions, and it do seem much more stable.
My problem seem to be related to large catalogs.
I am trying to move my master catalog with 75000 images, from LightRoom to CaptureOne.
Starting import everything goes fine up until around 15000 images with approx 3 images per second on my MacPro, then things gradually slows down, until CaptureOne becomes completely unresponsive and needs to be force quit on the Mac Pro.
Restarting, I will be able to import another few thousand images.
Best regards
Trond0
