Removing excessive highlights.

I find that an easier way and more effective (than compared with High Dynamic Range slider) – to reduce over highlights is to move the top of the right vertical bar of the Curve graph inwards. This reduces the default value (255) and removes the blown highlight warnings.

The problem is that I don’t know what I’m doing!

What is the explanation for the above, i.e. what does adjusting the top of the graph actual do?
