Relocating referenced photos

I have a catalog with referenced photos in a separate folder+subfolders+subsubfolders on my main SSD. In order to save space I would like to move some but not all of the photos on an external disk. Does one do this in the Finder or does one do this within the catalog in the Library view under the "Folders" section?
