Is it possible for you to go back to Expression Media? (maybe only for the time beeing, untill the next update..)
The whole rendering part is one of the main reasons for me not to 'upgrade' yet from EM to MP.

    Hi Roelof,

I had purchased EM, but was using ACDSee Pro3-4 and never installed EM. Since ACDSee really works rather nice, except for PSD files (I recently started saving in NON compat mode as it saves PSD's faster) that are not saved in compatibility mode and PDF's. It would also have trouble seeing files I captured using 3.78 with extension being .TIF vs iQ) I installed a ghostscript for it to see PDF, but that made ACDSee a bit unstable. I also never took it too serious as a DAM app with its Developer option. It has really matured with pro4, and does a darn good job, and now with lots of metadata options it's rather powerful as a DAM. Where it falls short is when having multiple computers, the database is not really portable, or accessible from network as a host. It also isn't designed for a user to create catalogues, but has one large database, making some things slow or hang and so forth. So MediPro with its ability to make text or watermark overlays on resize with batch abilities like ACDSee(Bridge can do this also, but it is a painfully slow app) with ALL types of formats viewable including InDesign, PDF, and Ai, text, and so forth, I thought it would be the chosen "One" (ha!goes well with my title).
But I am actually surprised it was released in such a state. One of the marketed so called key features is to show adjustments made in C1 in MediaPro, this maybe cool, but when it comes down to it, its just an icing...IF all the file types were supported, as that is the core of the app, to manage what's there in the folders, maybe a nice add-on.But without the ability to smoothly see TIF,PSD,PDF and other core file types that EVERY photographer uses at some point MPro would really stumbles and fail.

I have no doubt Phase will fix this, but I think the frustration comes from not knowing what is reported to be a problem area, or if it is cross platform, or specific types of files, etc. Disclosure on Phase ones part, is key, so we can say..."Oh, they know about that particular glitch and have it on the radar to fix", etc.
Now with xyz number of issues that may or may not be related, it is unclear which is priority their dev team to tackle. There maybe some that are easy to fix, but not so popular or not core...and that's where PO can hurt themselves more, by releasing a premature update, and perhaps the reason why the update is taking time. but if they release an update that does NOT address the file types of ALLLL Tif files, ALLLL PSD files, and PDF ... the STANDARD we submit advert material to magazines in! and the core claim of a PRO app.( InDesign would be a great one also)...Throw out the C1 Adjustments if you have to (I keep saying this as I think PO is kinda trying to make that really happen and make the marriage with the 2 apps stronger, BUT without the core types being fully supported, that icing is pointless from a user standpoint (vs their marketing exec desires).

So Roelof...will EM2 read my catalogue files I made with MPro, or would I have to start over? No big deal to install EM and work from it. I'm actually unfamiliar with what MPro's strenths are over EM? other than maybe being more stable in Win7(assuming it may not be due to age), the C1 adjustments I could care less about (nice, but I often dev using ACRaw).

    thanks

ps to Ulf or Drew reading and compiling a list of ToDo's for the update...it would be nice to display the full file name on the top after the catalogue name or bottom with some more info, as the one selected in the thumbnails get truncated without any full name displayed.

Update after ignoring the file types it can't see. The TIF file I did see, I thought I would take a couple and work on a new ad mock up. I wanted to make smaller files from the original to make the layout.

I selected the couple files, and went to Action/Convert Image File. this would take the original and I could tell it to make a Jpeg from it in a specific resolution and place it in a specific folder and hope to save this as I would need it or a version of it later for sure.

I got to the point to Make "New Folder" after scrolling to the folder(I hope it will remember, or Pull info as to which folder the catalogue is made from. That way you don't have to jump thru all the file folders to get to the root of the catalogue working in). Anyway, I got tot the folder, and tried to rename it from "New Folder" to JPEG I am working from but it wouldn't save in it unless I let be. Then when I checked in explorer it had named it Jpeg. Even an "Update Folder Now" didn't show a new folder made in either name. Only after i made another Action to convert another file did it show the changes in the Catalog Fields. Not sure why? On top of that, my saved preset in the options drop down was not even visible...I would also hope I can simply select the previous name I made and simply change some detail info on it, rather than try and guess what I wrote to keep some uniform order, and ease of entering the data in the first place.

I would highly recommend the POne Dev team take a trail version of ACDSeePro4 to see how Batch Processing of files works and how different options to those files are set. All in one panel and all saved with ease of access. This is likely a heavily used feature for anyone making smaller versions for layouts or emailing the files.

I did notice there is an Send Email Action in the drop down, and I do see it being useful in a way as the pixel can be set and you can define some info of the file. But I don't use my editing station for emails, but I am sure many do. I would still use the Convert and make the file to a Jpeg with the same options as I would in the Send Email, yet access that file from a different computer or remotely log in and go to the folder and send it without the MPro app having to deal with Outlook or complicating things.

I also wanted to move files to another folder, so I right clicked the file and tried "Move to Location". This did nothing. Transfer to Folder however did bring up a 3 option panel, and the explanation is a bit confusing as to what happens to the main large original file vs the catalog created file, and how the catalog will refer to it, but I think I managed albeit with little assurance, and hope that I will remember what I did last time....well looking over it now, I better address it here...
    Option to Move...
Move files, reset paths, and delete originals is explained as moving media files to a new folder. Which are the "media" files? I am assuming original, or master or, some term that indicates the actual file the catalog was made from.
So yes, we want to move the original and have MPro update the catalog to reflect the move taking place. that's it.

    Copy files and reset paths...
leads you to think that there will be a copy of your original made in the new location, and thats what copy is and that sounds accurate to me.

    Duplicate files...
I guess this does make a dupe of the original master file, but the dupe will not be seen in the catalog as the changes wont be made. I don't see the use of this feature, but I am certain there is a reason.(?)

Afterward I am happy to see it remember the last place you worked. It would be sweet if that stays in mem of each catalog you open and work with. These maturities will surely come down the line after the updates (if lucky with it).

Another thing I notice in the tutorial video is MAC os's option to open last, New or Do Nothing when launching MPro. This is surely a must. Do nothing should even be default. as I keep selecting close to ensure I don't have blank ones open before opening up my catalogs, but you cant really tell.

I think thats it for now.

    UPDATE:

After removing one of the codecs, I thought things would be OK, but in fact there were a few more things I needed to do, such as use a WIC rendering engine and a few other options Mardon nicely posted in the thread regarding PSD file types etc.

Thanks Mardon. Also it looks like you are better at selecting multiple files when doing a rebuild for a thimbs, as I noticed it works best. So now my catalogs are taking shape with no messy file types. (one of my most used Fields to view from.

So there is light, so big bright ones for me and Media Pro. I still have an issue with seeing PDF files. They just show as a blank white after I do a thumb Rebuild. InDesign files are also still just a generic icon (not even the apps icon).
When launching files into Photoshop it sometimes opens and sometimes it hangs, or somehow Photoshop gets funky. This I would start to look into Pshop to fix, but it maybe something during the hand off, as when i launch from File/Open in PShop, It doesn't have the issues...Not conclusive, but, perhaps someone has noticed something also?

But all in all, it is getting WAY better as not seeing TIF and PSD was like getting a double double hamburger without the cheese and patty. So now we have the meat of the matter chuggin away. I have had a few freezes and catalogs locked, and I've had to save as another name....regardless, I like working with catalogs I see and recognize and can move and name, etc. Thanks Reolof, Jim and Mardon and other who have posted with helpful feedback.
