On the fence...
Hi all, many of you shoot raw and use Capture One Pro. Why? What makes it worth the sizable investment? Do you use it for screening images, does it load thumbnails fast for a quick preview/first pass of images? Do you convert to tiff or directly to jpeg? My current workflow is a quick first pass with BPP to delete junk (very quick), DPP conversion to tiffs, final edits in PS2, BPP to jpeg. To do it all in one program would be great, and maybe get rid of the tiff conversion step in the process.
Forgot...I use Noise Ninja sometimes, does it fit in the C1 workflow?
Biggest concerns are:
- Quick review of thumbnails
- Quality conversion
- Basic edits available
- Speed
So, what say you C1 users, is this the one-stop-shop do-it-all program? Thanks much.
PS I shoot sports and usually about 500 to 1,000 shots per event, often multiple events in a day, so workflow speed is very important.

All I can say is download and try it out and REALLY try it out. The interface is a little weird at first, but once you get going it is the fastest way to convert images. 0 -
I would say C1PRO is geared more for the serious studio photographer because of it's vast support for medium format users as well as 35mm. Its ability to link to the camera for instant download and preview as you shoot (tethered) is fast and professional. This is why i like it:
1. Real time changes, and i mean real-time. There is no lag using curve, white balance and sharpen tools.
2. fast syncing, changing the white balance of 200 images takes a second.
3. Probably the best Raw engine around.
3. It sits idle only using around 10mb of physical ram, that's less than skype!
Times are changing though and other apps are getting close. I have tested Lightroom extensively and think it has great potential. I exported a full size JPG from a raw file that resides on an external firewire drive in 5 seconds, it took 14s under the same conditions for C1 Pro. I also think LR has a more control over levels and curves.
At the moment I think C1Pro is the best out there because it's simply more refined and you don't need a monster computer to run it; but i think it's high price and 'very slight' arrogance, coupled with the rising competition will see users defect rather than pay another premium for version 4.0 -
I think I have tried (and bought) just about every decent RAW converter that there is out there. At the end of the day I just keep coming back to C1 Pro. Its results and interface are just to my liking.
My workflow in a nutshell is:
Shoot RAW ->Download using Downloader Pro which lets me rename at the same time->Review the CR2's using Breezebrowser Pro and delete the obvious junk->RAW conversion using C1 Pro to 16bit TIff->final touches in CS2.
I have a great many images that come out of C1 that never need anything done to it other than resizing and sharpening. C1 is just that good, imo. I can say that after trying RSP and Bibble Pro I can not say the same thing about those conversions.0
