geotagging disappointment
I'I’ve been using a workflow that includes a lot of geotagging with the aid of a hotshoe based gps device and Expression Media Pro 2. My workflow has evolved as a result of the increase in geotagging tools in the various versions of iView Media and Expression Media. I am disappointed that the geotagging has taken a big step backward and doesn't seem to be discussed in the documentation. I realize that changes in relationships with different software companies will result in a change in the way some tools function, but not being able to drag an image to a map and have the gps coordinates automatically updated is an inconvenience after working this way for so long. I appreciate that a Google map shows the location if desired, so there was an effort to keep some functionality of geotagging features, but better integration is necessary for me to completely abandon an older version of Media Pro. Geotagging has become an extremely important part of what I do; I would love to see this developed further.

I don't get those too sentences to match. If you have a GPS device, why do you need to geotag images manually by drag and drop? GPS devices were not supported by any previous versions as well.
I never used the manual geotagging feature of EM2 as it was based on Microsoft's VirtualEarth, and at least for the parts of the world were I have pictures from, I found anything based on Google Maps or Earth much more detailed, and often easier to use.0 -
There are always times when gps devices can't receive satellite reception. In the past if I had two shots that were geotagged successfully with one shot in between them that wasn't, I could just select the two geotagged images, which would show pushpins on a map, and drop the third image in the right location and the coordinates would be updated without any copying and pasting. I'm not looking for criticism of my post or even a work-around, if there is a way to achieve this without extra steps, I'd like to know what it is. If it doesn't exist, I'm just putting it out there as feedback for the developers because I'm sure there are or will be others with the same issues. I have no preference between Google or Bing, would just like to see the same integration that I'm used to when I pay for an "Upgrade". 0 -
I think the point here whether you use it or not, is that removing the ability to geotag images from within the program without replacing it with something of the same capability is a retrograde step.
Or as put by the OP,a downgrade when paying for a upgrade, and I agree with him, however PhaseOne couch the words to make it seem acceptable.0 -

I can certainly pass that suggestion along however the adjustment is seen as an improvement as appose to a step backwards. The tool now simply requires some form of GPS Location data to work.
The adjustment for the "View Location on Map" was made to reference Exif Data primarily. If you add Latitude and Longitude to an image (one without embedded EXIF data) in the proper Annotation field then you can view the tool just the same as images with embedded coordinates. This adjustment is to keep in line with industry standards for Exif/IPTC data.

So if industry standard and virtual earth is a problem then why not implement something like ACDsee that uses Google Maps and complies with the industry standard where you just drag the images to the location to geotag them?

As I said however the words are couched the result is still a retrograde step and results in something that was useful to many being taken away. ☹️0 -
I'm amazed that the company would consider this a "step forward"?! Most of these products do have the ability to drag/drop onto a map - I think this is pretty standard stuff these days to add location info (even elevation info) to an image. 0
