On my Windows 9.2.1 version, the Levels tool does not have a "Adjust Selected Layer" option in its triple-dot menu.

This means it can't be used to adjust masked areas in layers.

Tools that have the "Adjust Selected Layer" option enabled display a small brush icon next to the tool name.

Although Levels is not available as a local adjustment, Curves is. You can therefore get much the same effect as with Levels by dragging in the markers at the top and bottom of the curve, and affect just the masked area in a similar way to Levels.

Thank you, Richard and Ian. My ignorance of the software. I did search for a list of tools you could use on adjustment layers before posting but turned up empty. 😭

Then easiest way to see what tools you can use on a local adjustment layer is to look to see what the default set of tools is that appear in the local adjustment tab - all the ones that are there can be used that way, either on that tab, or on other tabs in which they appear.

Also, if the tool is a Local Adjustments rather than global, it will have the little LA brush icon next to the tool name

Thank you, Ian and Ben. Ben_US: I had not noticed that tiny brush icon before. Thank you.
