How edit images first on laptop and then on network drive?
I have been using Capture One on a MacBook Pro laptop to import images from the camera's card and store them locally in ~/Pictures. The catalog is also stored there. Images are captured and stored locally when traveling. When I get home and finish editing the images, I want to move them to a corresponding folder on a network drive and remove them from my laptop to make room for images from future travels. I would like to be able to continue to access and edit files on the network drive just like I did when they were on my laptop assuming I'm connected to the network. It isn't clear to me how to do this with as little complexity as possible. Your help would be appreciated.

Assuming you can connect to the network drive from your MacBook, you can add the appropriate folder on the network drive to the catalog, then within the Capture One Library tool, just drag and drop the images to it. Capture One should take care of remembering where the images have moved to, and it still holds the information about edits, and the previews, inside the catalog.
But I know that some users have had had trouble using Capture One with network drives, so I suggest trying it with a few images at first and making sure that you can still do what you want with them - edit, export, etc.

Thanks Ian. Yes, that approach had occurred to me. But I wonder if this would work: when I right-click on a folder in the Library tool there is a Locate... item. If I copy the image folder on the laptop to the network drive and then select Locate... and point at the network drive folder, does it add that drive and folder to Library and transfer the edits and previews to it? If that works, it would be quite easy to have the images on both laptop and network and be able to edit on either after using Locate... to point at the one that is available and fastest. 0 -
In fact, I just tried that and it seems to work quite nicely. So, if you have image files copied on two drives, you can switch the edits from one to the other and back again using Locate. C1 moves the folder to right part of the Library tree each time. 0 -

Yes, that is correct. As long as you do not use the space on your internal drive, you can do that. But why would you?
I mean, assume the images are on the external drive only and you are disconnected from it. You still have the previews to view and edit. Once you get back and connect to the external drive, you can export or process.
In addition, you might want to clean up your images, delete some (at least, I do). That might create confusion.
But if it works for you, please do. I would not do unnecessary locate actions on the database. Verify your database regularly, is the best advice I can give you.0 -
Thanks Paul. That brings up a point I haven't been entirely clear on - do I not need access to the image files to do any type of editing or zooming in on images once they have been imported into the catalog? I guess I had assumed that there might be some action of that sort that would require the image files. 0 -
Some actions do require access to the image files, but most editing can be done without.
You would do well to spend a little time with some of the video on how catalogs work either on the Capture One learning hub or on their YouTube channel. You'd find all that and more explained.
