I am familiar with this behavior. My way of working (and understanding) is that all keyboard shortcuts without key modifier (Shift, Cmd, Cntrl, Option) can be both field input or cursor tool selector.
The only way I can make a character like C(rop) or R(otate) be understood as cursor tool selector, is when the I first click a thumbnail (the thumbnail has the focus in the program). This is not visible however. Note that some cursor tool selections work with Shift as well, like Sh-R (selecting the next rotation tool).

    Thanks Paul,

I never had this problem with C1 in Version 4. It really is starting to drive me crazy! Is it a common problem you think? What I am unclear about is that if C1 provide shortcuts such as (C)crop, doesn't it defeat the purpose to use the mouse to click on the image first?

Once in the field input, I try and click the image and nothing happens. The only way to get out of the text input is to change tool.

Do you think that this is a bug in the program and I need to address it with a customer support case?

    Thanks,

    Brendan
