C1 V4.x please persevere!
Hello everyone,
I've recently seen lots of very frustrated and disgruntled V4.5.2 users on this forum. I too wasn't happy with the newest offering from Phase at first glance, but after persevering for some time I can see the method in their madness. C1V4 Is VASTLY superior to V3.x. I can see its going to be a work in progress between Phase developers and users of their product. I don't know if most of you remember the early days of C1 V3, it was as buggy as hell, difficult to use and an overall nightmare. Isn't that what improving a product is all about? The developers were dedicated to creating the industry standard of capture and RAW processing software for you.... It was a long time in the making but they finally got there with a super stable multi platform multi camera solution. 4.x is no different, nothing great happens overnight. There was a necessity to reinvent C1, although not perfect by any means it must be seen as a constant work in progress to make it truly great. So please hang in there.... Use it, get used to its quirks, send CREATIVE criticism to the dedicated people that provide this amazing system for us and soon it will satisfy your every whim. If you really look at it, we as photographers ARE and integral part of the development of this fantastic software. Be positive, be supportive, most of all be patient.
While I'm here Id like to address some shortcomings V4.5.2 has with mac fibre channel volumes.
I store all of my RAW sessions on a RAID and manipulate them from there. V3.7.9 handles this workflow perfectly. V4 can do it, but for some reason its cripplingly slow to do lots of very basic things like moving, renaming, trashing etc. But I've got to say V4.5.2 processes like an absolute DEAMON!!!! Faster than anything I've seen. Besides the other myriad if known bugs, I really grown to love the flexibility it offers.
Oh yes one more thing..... Please bring back the old tagging system!!!!!!!!! even I cannot see the sense in that star rating system you've adopted.... Why??? If you all want to keep it thats cool, just make the good ol' green (+) yellow (?) and red (-) tags work again PLEEEEEEESSE!
My hat off to you guys at Phase for doing what you do for us, and my apologies to you for the impatient ones that HAMMER you on this forum. Keep up the good work! I believe in you!!!!!!
Best wishes for the festive season.

Right. But meanwhile we have 2008. Not 5 percent of all photographers are shooting digital on all of their shoots like when C1pro3 was invented, 95 percent do.
If a stable good working software which is state of the art for most professional photographers aside from those who are owner of a leaf or imacon d-back changes in total and brings out a buggy version with all good features for capturing removed you do have to understand if they got "hammered".
I cant say i am happy if i have to work with the latest Cameras, a very expensive Model and a buggy captured software that was good but decided to change all what made it that good.
I mean - what is more important - 1500 files devoloping an hour more - or the whole crew is getting a bit grumpy to the digital tech after the millionst breakdown - kicked out camera or alike. I mean - it is surely a way to pay a 10k dollar model some nice extra cash.
So everybody that moans - got the full right to do i think. Better they moan now and moan noisy so something will be changed before somebody else is changing things.0 -
Yup, please persevere.
Another V4.5.2 happy user here. Still perfectible but, hei, so many pieces of software come "as is" these days.
Still, even at this early moment I wouldn't return to the good old 3.7.
For those who are not happy with v4 (or for those shooting 10k models lol) there might be a solution to step back to 3.7.
All IMHO.0 -

It might be a shock but in fashion advertising models cost a little more - but it is not the place here to disgrace what people shoot or what not.. sorry to say, but stupid comment.
If you can live with bugs - fine. Somehow some cant. Only today i had 3 crashes of C1pro 4.
Latest Cameras and Backs are forcing the user to use C1pro4 btw.
I tell you about an average shooting i am working as digital tech for:
Tethered shoot
2 Comps
1 for the incomming files with 2 screens - 1 for the photographer, 1 for me and the artdirctors, editors, customers etc
The other comp for me - developing files, polaprints, etc while they are still on that picture or latest while they are on the next one. End of the shoot they expect to get the data they request.
With breakdowns a shoot costs simply hell a lot more time as the photgrapher and the whole team cant get into a flow. Guess what customers say when it does not run fluent - yes.. they dont book you anymore or they are telling you to change your system.
Thats why it is urgent need to have either a stable system or at least the possibility to use the stable old one with all cameras.0 -
Here I was learning to love this software again and all the adjustments made on yesterday's session are gone today, I have to do everything from scratch. Thankful for small mercies no client around to hear me curse.

What I have noticed, which is important to know for digital tech's is that Capture One 4's error handling is (yet!) not as good as Capture One 3.
As an example when working as a tech and you had a firewire cable that was on its last leg you where use to getting error messages which basically was a "-7000" error code.
While in new version there can be either loss of connection, capture tool locked or I have also experienced crash.
This is all stuff that is stuff that is being ironed out as we speak.
A and O for any digital tech is to have extra fresh firewire cables.
Know to set Phase One digital backs to battery power if computer does not meet power requirements.
Last but not least, no 10meter cables with out repeaters!
Another one is of course the RSIZE memory issue which is documented in the release note. This is a Mac OS issue but we can not point fingers and stand on the side line waiting for Apple so this for a fact I know is fixed in Capture One 4.6 which is due to be released very very soon.0 -

Ulf,
I have been using CO Pro for many many, years. I used to get annoyed by crashes due to Firewire or USB disconnects during the shoot. The weight of the cable is one culprit, then the camera/computer ports gradually get worn loose over time only adding to the problem.
I have developed a product to keep the load off the cable and keeping it more securely connected to both the camera (2-1/4 backs and DSLRs) and the port of the computer.

I am looking for both selling to users, and setting up a dealer/partnership network. If you want to discuss this further off-forum, contact me via the email link on the TetherGRIP website.0 -
I also have had load errors a few times over the last couple of weeks. Make selections and adjustments and close C1. When I go back to the session all the adjustments have gone.
All I get is a load error message. Is this a common problem? It's as if the C1 pref file gets trashed and it all starts from scratch on relaunch. Are there any work around for this?0 -
For now we're supposed to go into the Settings45 folder in the capture folder and delete ".error" from the cos files. Trying to stay good humored about this but I hope the next release is a professional implementation, this one is embarrassing.

The more I use, the more I like V4, 4.5.2 is actually quite usable fast on my old PowerMac G5. I am still bothered by certain things which I already listed often (I am just too stupid to find out how to create a support case for Capture One only).
Besides the fact that it is not supported on PowerPPC models (and probably that is why I have this wired font issue in the Library view) it still works very well. And the results are miles better than Lightroom v2. CaptureOne is still the best RAW software out there, even when V4 had and still has a very rocky start ...0 -
