Another Renaming issue...
Has anyone else noticed this other renaming issue that happens to us all too frequently?
All our images save to our capture folder in numerical sequence by default. We then tag our edits, remove the "non-selects" and rename the finals to match whatever convention or client requires. This is commonly done by simply copying the file name out of an Excel spreadsheet and pasting it into the name field below the thumbnail in the Thumbnails window. Then we tweek and process.
Pretty easy stuff, BUT... sometimes while renaming, the names" jump" around.
It's hard to explain but I'll give it a shot. Just for descriptive purposes let's' say I have ten final images in my Thumbnails window and I've already named four of them. I'll go and copy the fifth name and attempt to paste it beneath the correct thumbnail. The name will appear in the text field until I click away, then the name will "jump" to a different thumbnail and the original session name will return beneath the thumbnail I tried to rename. Sometimes the name jumps to the last thumbnail I named but not always. I also occasionally notice the thumbnail preview images flash in a different order at the same instant.
We are an all Mac shop and this could, of course, be an OS issue but we have the latest versions of both C1 and OS X and I've seen this happen on multiple machines, both Intel and PPC.
Mostly, this is a nuisance issue. It happens intermittently and we have learned to be observant and always double check our work. So far we have not made any errors that have affected our clients. But I fear that one of these days we are going to accidentally switch the names on a couple of images and the wrong products are going to appear in the wrong spots in a catalog.
Has anyone else seen this behavior or have any ideas what might be going on?
Thanks,

Brion,
I think I may have an idea of what is going on and please correct me if I am wrong. I remember experiencing a very similar situation in my days as a digital tech. When you rename an image Capture One is going to re-organize the files in the thumbnail window based on your settings (usually reorganizing by name). There is a slight delay in the time that the files reorder so what happens is that you can select an image while this is occurring the selection will jump to the new image in its place. The solution to this is to wait an few extra seconds between renaming.
If it will work within your workflow I would personally recommend changing the capture name when you start each shot, that way your images already carry the correct naming convention and they can be easily archived.0 -
Hi Jon,
Thanks for your swift reply.
I know of the circumstances that you are referring to but unfortunately, I don't think that what you suggest could be the issue. We are not usually renaming files in that quick a succession.
This issue is quirkier than that. Everything will be in proper order, all images properly organized (usually by name, as you guessed). Nothing will be processing or resorting. I will highlight my next images title, paste in the new name and then things get weird. The new name will show up on a different image.
It really is inexplicable. I've been doing this a long time and I've never seen anything like it. I only wish it was not so intermittent and I could force it to be repeatable.0 -
Have you tried pasting from other apps or keying in the new name to see if it still happens? Maybe some weird formating from Excel. Try changing to sort by shot date when renaming. 0
