Why 'Read only" ??

My guess - MP crashed the last time you saved it, resulting in a catalog file that is still "in use".

Just resave it under a new name - like Family #2.

    Hi,

I sometimes had this behavior before in the days of iView Media Pro and the only way to fix it was to save the catalogue with a new name - until the next time ...

When this happens I usually find that just adding a star to one image allows you to save the catalog normally and unlock it without having to save it as a new catalog, you can remove the star later.

I'm getting the same thing: When I try to open a catalog that I've previously saved, I get the message that the file is already open by (my username) and an option to open as read only. It tells me that once I do that I can save it back under a different name using the "Save as..." command and then the file will be unlocked. But when I do exactly that, I get the same thing the next time I try to open the newly named file.

I tried the suggestion in an early post to give one photo a star and then save it back, but that didn't work either.

The only thing I could find that would allow me to open a catalog file after saving it was to use Finder's "Get Info" command, click on the "+" sign at the bottom and add "Administrators" to the users under Sharing & Permissions. I then assigned the "Admin" user Read & Write permissions and closed the Get Info window. When I opened that file the next time I still got the "read-only" message, but after I opened it as read-only I saved it back under a different name. I was then able to open that newly named file without getting the read-only message. But .... after adding some photos to the catalog and saving the file, I found that I once again got the read-only message. This time I assigned one star to one photo, saved it back (under same name) and was able to open it next time without read-only. I do have a semblance of a life, so I can't keep trying every option over and over to see if I've really solved it this time — though I suspect not.

Very confusing, I know, and not really a good solution. I would love to hear from someone with PhaseOne about how to truly unlock this file once and for all. My suspicion is that Media Pro sets a bit in the file when it opens that keeps someone else from opening the same file (presuming that the catalog file is available on a network), and that bit is supposed to be cleared when the file is closed, but is not being cleared in some cases.

I get this often, even when Media Pro hasn't crashed, but (at least on the Mac) this causes no problem other than my having to dismiss the read-only prompt. As soon as I make any change I can just save the catalog (after a warning that it will overwrite the read-only file) without having to "Save As".
