Think of the file as Table of Contents for your session. Where files are located, where you left off working, where you send Processed files, Selects, Trashed files and how you organize your favorites.

OK, thank you. So if I use Express there is only one default session.

    What I loose:
    -Output folder if not default
-Trash folder if not default (I recall some issue in the past that if a Trash folder is not set by user than all deleted images do not have a 2nd chance to delete from hard drive, do I recall right?)
-CO returning to the last selected image when I return to an image directory.
    -Favorites lost
    -....?

I think, unless I am mistaken, all of these are no big deal to reset (vs. pro where there may be a lot of variety with sessions)

Your assumptions are correct. The Express version is bound to the default session. It is created the first time CO starts and will be recreated when missing.

    You will loose:
    - favourite folders
    - albums
    - custom session folders
    - smart albums

Loose mean the folders won't be seen by CO as it have been in the previous session but no file will be deleted. You will just need to set them again.
