Can images be edited without opening a catalog?

There is probably a straight forward way to close the open catalog and use the folder structure instead, but it's evading me. Can it be done?

I only use C1 occasionally and every time I come to it, I have to go through a long catalog update so that I can browse my recent images.

    For occasional use I suggest you work with a session instead of a catalog. CO Pro 7 allows you to use either sessions or catalogs at your convenience. With a session you can simply browse your disk folders and view images from the Library tool. Previews will be generated at first opening and stored in a sub folder of the image folder. With sessions you do not have to import, as with catalogs.
