How can I delete an "Open With" application?
I'm new to Capture One so I apologize if the answer is obvious.
The first question is can applications be added to the "Open With" list? Assuming they can:
I need to delete my PS CS4 64 bit "Open With" entry and replace it with the 32 bit version. I tried adding the 32 bit version and nothing happened (the 32 bit version was not added to the "Open With" list). I'm guessing it didn't add the second PS version because it already had a PS in the list so that is why I think I need to delete the existing PS in the list. How can I delete the PS CS4 64 bit version from the list?
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.
thanks, Leroy

You do not have to delete an application in the "Open With" drop-down list, but you can add one (or more) yourself. Simply, open that drop-down list and select "Browse" at the bottom of the list. Next, browse to the executable. Your 32-bit app on your 64-bit Windows will probably be located in \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop CS4. 0 -
I probably wasn't clear. I did try to add the 32 bit PS via the "Browse" on the drop-down - I navigated to and selected the file Photoshop.exe in the x86 directory. Nothing happened. CO did not add another item to the drop-down list and CO did not start PS. 0 -
To verify I'm doing it right I did an "Open With" using Capture NX2. That worked fine.
I did notice however that Capture NX2 did not stick to the list. In other words, every time I want to push an image to Capture NX2 I will have to navigate to it in the file list. Is that correct? Is that the way it is supposed to work? If that's the way it is supposed to work I hope there is something in the works to add an "Open With List Management" function soon. So that we can add (sticky add), delete and reorder our "Open With" applications.
So far I love the Capture One conversion but I need more latitude in my editing so I'll want to use the "Open With" applications frequently. I assume I'm not alone.0 -
The way it supposed to work is that you can add an application to the list, select it and use it persistently.
Regarding the 32-/64-bit version of Photoshop, I tested this some time ago. I remember it worked but not transparently in that you could randomly select either at will. CO5 may not add another item to the list but the existing CS4 entry should from now on point to the 32-bits version. Can you confirm/deny?0 -
Deny.
1. I opened CO and pointed the "Open With" to CS4 (just in case the 32 bit version stuck the last time I used it).
2. PS CS4 64 bit opened up.
3. I closed CO. I opened CO again.
4. I clicked "Browse" in the "Open With" drop-down. Navigated to PS 32 bit. Clicked open.
5. Nothing happened. The "Open With" box said "Browse..." and no other application opened up.
Another oddity is that although pushing to Capture NX2 worked with CO, Capture NX2 did not stick to the "Open With" list. I wonder if it's a permissions problem. Maybe I should try starting up CO as administrator? My user account is an administrator account but maybe CO needs more?0 -
More symptoms. This time I ran CO with the "Run as administrator" flag on in the shortcut.
1. Open CO and point the "OW" list to Capture NX2. CO successfully pushes the image to CNX. But CNX does not stick to the list.
Nothing new there.
2. In the same CO session as above, point the "OW" list to PS 32bit by navigating. The "OW" box still displays "Browse..."
Nothing new there.
3. I press "Process" just to see what happens with it pointing at "Browse...". CO successfully pushes the image to PS 64bit.0 -
CO should not need to run as administrator for any particular feature to come alive unless the authorizations on the system are mixed up. All configurations are stored in the user's profile.
I will run a similar scenario on a test system later this week. Besides Macs, I have a Win7 x64 system with CS5 but I installed only the 64-bit part of it so I can not try this out.0 -
Leroy, I played around with a setup which consists of Win7 x64, CO 5.1.1 (both regular and Pro) and Photoshop CS5 (both 32- and 64-bit versions installed). My experiences are roughly the same as yours. Although I managed to get CS5 32-bits to start up due to the Open With setting, I had really trouble having CO 5.1.1 selecting the application. Once succeeded, the 32-bits version remained persistent between restarts of CO5. The displayed application is the default Photoshop CS5 text. However, once I changed for another application, reversing to Photoshop CS5 entry in the drop-down list started the 64-bits version again.
No particular difference between an administrative user account and an user with lower (User) privileges. No difference between CO5 regular and Pro.
I will open a case with Phase One requesting to look into this. It would be nice if the two versions of PS CS4 or 5 would be easier to set and distinguish between, allowing the user to select this add will.
Have to look into this on Mac as well. The 64-bits version was introduced with CS5, not available in CS4 yet, so it is new on that platform.0 -
Addition: some workarounds for the issue discussed here.
1. Install only the version (either 32- or 64-bit) which you use most. This is possible with CS5, not sure about CS4
2. Open the desired version (i.e. 32-bits) before you hit the Process command in CO5; despite pointing to the 64-bits version of CSx, the processed image will open in the 32-bits CSx0 -
Thank you Paul. That #2 workaround works on my PC too. Thanks.
And thank you for opening a case. I'm sure they'll get it fixed. Hopefully they will also make the Open With tool more useful by adding the ability to actually edit the application list (add, delete, rename, reorder, etc.).0 -
Additional workaround:
3. Change the file association (TIFF, JPEG) from the 64-bits to the 32-bits version.
Explanation. I think that at the heart of the issue is the fact that a) CO4 & 5 refer to the Windows file association for the file types at hand; b) CO4 & 5 read the friendly description and not the executable name of the association (hence you don't see 'Photoshop.exe' in the drop-down list but 'Adobe Photoshop CS5') and c) PS CS4 & 5 have the same friendly description for both the 32- & 64-bit version. As a result CO4 & 5 can not distinguish between the two CSx versions.
After installation of PS CS4 or 5 on a 64-bits Win system, the file association defaults to the 64-bits version (double clicking a TIFF will open the 64-bits version). You can change this to default the 32-bits version and CO4 & 5 will default to the same as well.
Note that as a result renaming one of the Photoshop executables won't help you out either.0 -
I can't get that workaround (#3) to work for me. It seems the Windows Open With is just as confused as the CO Open With. Even when I point Windows to the 32 bit version, it still opens the TIFF with the 64 bit version. Just like CO.
BTW, starting tomorrow I'll be on the road for a couple of weeks with only the laptop so I won't have the 64 bit confusion problem. But I also won't be able to test workarounds, etc.0
