bad news ... if you are using MP with C1 CATALOG !
bad news ....if you are using MP with vendor CATALOG " Lightroom,Apertur,,,,APPLE FOTO...
bad news .... if you are using with Photoshop.. layer ,,,
good news it works great with C1 SESSIONS
and jpgs, tiff .. on not closed HD folder.0 -
Here is what I have found works well enough for now.
Create a BLANK C1 Session.
In MP you have 2 options. Create a Catalog Set that have the images you want to edit (or atleast containing the ones you want to edit there can be more in the catalog) or select 2 or more photos in MP and then select to edit them in the external C1 program from within MP.
If using the Catalog Set (the best way think) then C1 will open, and and NOT rebuild all the previews etc for the other pictures in that folder (assuming they have already been build the first time)
So here is a possible workflow:
1. Open C1
2. Import, And in the IMPORT TO section Pick where you want to put the Imported RAW. Dont use the session folder ( I have a structure like \\RAW\2016\01\01) You can force the imported pictures to automatically create this structure using the IMPORT TO Settings.
3. After the import happens you can make your edits, discard photos whatever. USE C1v9 for now v10 edits dont seem to play nice with MP just yet.
4. Close C1 as your all done
5. Open MP - import the folder where you just imported the photos.
6. Create a Catalog Set in MP for this import (and make sure these pictures are in it)
7. Bit redundant her but I EXPORT ANNOTATIONS / Catalog Sets etc ...
8. Save the MP Catalog.
Now when your browsing even a single photo in the MP Catalog Set, if you say open in C1, C1 will open the LAST SESSION (which is the BLANK ONE providing you not opening other Sessions or Catalogs in C1) ... in that Session it will automatically create a ALBUM (names as the catalog set) and have your single photo in it or multiple photos if you picked more than one in MP.
Since the adjustments, and preview files are already there no rebuilding will take place.
I have been ON/OFF with FULL SYNC and .XMP files. If you really need the ratings and colour selections to be two way (meaning if you make it 5 star in C1 and you want MP to see it) then you will need to tunrn on XMP file creation in C1 and MP and Full sync and you will have to wait each time in the above process for the XMP to sync - no way arround that one I know of.
Now once you have done your edits, go back to MP and say do a rebuild and you will see your changes in Mp.
I really hope this helps.
I would Really Really like C1 to be like Aperature DAM ... but I have resided to the fact that this will never be.
With the process being so convoluted, there is nearly no reason to stick with C1 as my editor ... Right now its the best for what I do and like, however there is the $20+ Canadian I pay each month for the subscription. This may eventually lead me to different solutions.
Absolutely NOTHING has come close to the clean workflow of Aperature ... I find that so incredible that apple could have been that far ahead ... There are those waiting for AfinityPro to get a catalog going, and PhotoMechanic to get one going ... and still nothing ... there are others, but MP is quite good at what it does .. its just the integration.
Ok Rant over. 😊0 -
FOR ME...

Yes you can store previews in the catalog and set Media Pro to always use them:
1. Go to : Edit > Thumbnails and Previews
2. Check the box to Create full screen previews. Decide which size preview to use (larger ones greatly increase catalog size up to 4x). I recommend 1280 pixels and Medium for Quality.
3. Check the box to Display previews at all times.
4. Optionally, click on Set as Default and all catalogs created on that computer will use those settings.
5. Click OK.
This is going to make your catalogs huge and slow down initial import of items but will dramatically improve the speed of viewing items once they're catalogued. Personally, I use 640 pixel thumbnails and do without building previews.

FWIW before Phase One acquired the software Microsoft to were about to implement a keyboard shortcut to turn on/off Display previews at all times. You would leave it on and only turn it off to view at larger sizes like 100%. Lightroom only just implemented a similar feature to use Smart Previews unless you zoom in to 100% where it then renders the whole image.

Cheers Robert
will give it a try0 -

I still wonder, why MP takes SUCH a looong time to render the individual files when browsing thru the images when I just browse JPEG files. I have a rather decent MAC machine and in Aperture I see previews when browsing individual media in no time. So why this long render times?? Just don`t get it... 🙄 ´ 0 -
My guess is Media Pro still uses the same rendering pipeline created 10 years ago based on Apple Quicktime, at least on Mac. One of Aperture's final updates allowed it to use embedded previews greatly speeding up display - just like Photo Mechanic always has. Phase One did update Media Pro to use their raw rendering but the downside is that it slowed down displaying previews on the fly. 0 -
Thanks Robert, understand the point - stresses once more that there is a lot of legacy code in MP still... Good product though! 0 -

Take the good with the bad: there's a lot of legacy code and features that other DAM apps are only just discovering or implementing!0 -
