How to select photos from multiple folders in a Catalog

Does anyone know I can select the photos from two or more folders in a catalog and maybe even use a filter on them?
Somehow I can only select one folder at a time and I would like to create a subselection of some of the photos in these folders.
In a session I can create a smart album with the selected photos but I am missing this function in the catalog, or.... am I missing something?
